Weddell Seal Pup via Gmaxwell
the last week of september is sea otter awareness week. where most marine mammals rely on a layer of insulating blubber to keep warm in the water, sea otters make use of their dense fur coat.
in fact, their fur is so thick and soft that for centuries humans have hunted the animal. by 1929, sea otters had been virtually eradicated from alaska to california. and while populations of the animal are currently making a remarkable comeback in british columbia, they nevertheless remain an endangered species. Â
sea otters play a vital role in their aquatic ecosystem. in the absence of the animal, sea urchin populations explode, leading to the eradication of kelp forests, which in turn affects fish, sea birds and even eagle populations.
photos by tom and pat leeson (peekaboo otter), veronica craft (vogue otter), hal beral (sleepy otter), brian maxwell (cuddling albino otter), jeff foot (super excited screaming otter), matt maran (shouting otter), joe robertson (holding hands otters) and sharon landis (baby photo pose otter) suzi eszterhas (happy otter)
The 90s in one graphic.
During the 15-hour Senate filibuster on gun control, there were 38 shootings that killed 12 people and injured 36 more across America.Â
That roughly translates to one shooting per every 23 minutes.
this photo legitimately took me back to the 90s.
So much time spent playing this game on a similar television set in my friend's basement hahaha. God damnit I'm old.

âGlobal Invasionâ Please look at the full view: http://i.imgur.com/oKp3X0r.jpg Entry description: âInvasive marine species can impact on native biodiversity and human resources, with the European shore crab, Carcinus maenas, being the classic example. The carapace markings represent the global establishment of marine bioinvasions, which are increasingly prominent in a hyper-connected world.â Dimensions: 65 cm x 102 cm Materials: Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolour on Arches hot-press paper (365 GSM) Time taken: 45 hours ââââââââ Phew, done! Two weeks of intensive work but I am glad itâs over (and happy with the result considering itâs my third watercolour painting for about six years). My entry for the prestigious Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize 2016, held at the South Australian Museum. Itâs going to take about a month to hear if Iâm selected to display at the exhibition as a finalist (fingers crossed) so I will get the piece framed and mounted while I wait. This was for the 'Emerging Artistsâ category, as I have not yet had a solo exhibition. I went for the title 'Global Invasionâ in the end as I want viewers to think about marine bioinvasions as a whole, and because by definition, humans are THE most invasive species. Wasnât fair to put so much responsiility on the little crab! Also, the crabâs maximum carapace width is 9 cm, so the final is not to scale or that would be scary. And P.S. I did NOT forget New Zealand, it just didnât fit because of the carapace shape. Time to clean the palettes and sleep. Not drawing another crab for a looooooong time.
Behold the official flag of the Committee of Citizens Concerned for Pizza (CCCP)
Reminder that pineapple pizza is strictly forbidden by the CCCP.
So, the true colors of the anti-pineapple league shine through. Itâs socialism, pure socialism.
