Every time I come to Los Angeles it is more fun than the last. The premiere of #robreiner new film “LBJ” was spectacular #woodyharrelson is amazing as Linden Johnson #oscarworthy and it was a surprise to learn that he and #robertkennedyjr are old friends. The complex history of the #kennedyassassination is well known. The untold story of #lindenjohnson added new depth to my knowledge of the history. I urge you all to see the film LBJ @lbjmovie but I wish you all could have heard the panel discussion with #billmaher when Bobby discussed his personal experiences with LBj and his father while the cast shared their experiences in making the film. A few more hand studies. Gesture is everything with hands. Hey tell a story without words and that makes or breaks a painting. #ballpoint #christopherpugliese #sketch #drawanyway (at Blond)
Rework and rework and rework. Each time we try to be more expressive. #wip #drawanyway #draweverydamnday #anatomy (at SoHo)
Morning warm ups. I start every day off drawing. Fore shortening tends to be the the most challenging task. Photography is not good at capturing it so I use the mirror. Working from life reveals a series of rhythms that cross cross and connect. The foreshortened anatomy is almost incomprehensible but the rhythms stitch it together. (at Chinatown, Manhattan)
I’ve worked a lot in ballpoint pen. It forces you to think ahead as you draw. The secret is to work lightly and build up slowly but in the end you must be decisive and make every mark relate to every other mark on the page. This process creates “relatedness “ and makes the image more interesting. For those of you in NYC this week end. I am teaching a special anatomy workshop ... https://www.meetup.com/drawingnewyork/events/243828358/ #ballpoint #christopherpugliese #sketch #anatomy (at Chinatown, Manhattan)
I’ve done a lot of drawing over the years. The goal is to capture a sense of life. Usually this can only be achieved quickly. I find it helps to do a lot of Ling poses as well. There is something powerful about spending a long time looking at something or someone. Often the sense of life is lost in these long poses, but an understanding can be achieved that comes out unexpectedly when we work from life. #christopherpugliese #wip #pencildrawing #standingpose #backview #acadianationalpark @academic_artworks @art.aesthetics
I often work on paintings for several years. I learned this practice from Rodin who says in his writing that you need to forget about a piece before you can come back to it, find it he kernel of the idea you started with and then figure out the best way to communicate that idea powerfully. This painting is about love. In this detail we see a portrait of unrequited love. The couple is about to kiss but they are not on the same level. The boys eyes are closed, he lost in his passion while her eyes remain open. Perhaps She is not so sure about this affair. This is a detail one mini drama in my painting “the Triumph of Love” 2011-present, 6 x 10 feet, oil on linen
Rule number one.: Everything always takes longer than planned. Rule number two: If you believe you can do it. Then do it fast. That said this took me a bit longer than I thought and it’s turning out better than I had hoped. Every time this happens I try to burn it into my brains; so that I will act with more confidence with every stroke of the brush. #christopherpugliese #wip #rainydaystyle

A little painting fun #christopherpugliese #oilpainting (at Blond)
#Workinprogress #christopherpugliese I've been thinking about this painting for four years. When I first started it I knew I was into something good, but deep down I knew it wasn't there yet. It has taken several years of adventures, heartbreaks and triumphs to come back to it and risk erasing the past to create something new. Check my previous posts and stories to see the bigger picture.
Cloud Nine, 2014-2017, oil and resin on linen, 32 x 48 As some of you know I've been working on this painting for a while. If you look back at previous posts I describe this painting as the one I destroyed. A genius painter named Steve Assel once said to me, "to get to the far Shore you have to lose sight of the near" I've taken that to heart. I learned to paint classically 30 years ago. Before there were ateliers and dozens of young painters interested in painting he figure. I was inspired by Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Michelangelo, but I have lost sight of that shore. I am looking for a new home. Some place called Cloud Nine. #christopherpugliese #cloud9 #oilpainting #cloudnine #michelangelo #stevenassael (at Opening Ceremony)

My submission for Single Fare 4. An exhibition created by @mrkagan and @jeanpierreroy of paintings on used/ thrown away metro cards. I found a bunch of them in the canal street subway station by my studio and decided to create my piece "9 Swipes for one Ride" with them. It was super fun to combine spray paint with oil paint and challengingvto work so small on an image that had to hold up when you separated the separate pieces. #christopherpugliese #singlefare4 #metrocard (at SoHo)
