I am cordially inviting all of you to post this in the comments/reblogs of any and every Al post you come across, on any platform. Especially useful for accounts who āteachā people how to use Al.
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you donāt like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lolĀ
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and weād really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ānoā and āOTPā and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one personās kink may be another personās squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And Thatās Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Donāt Like, Donāt Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A ālive and let liveā philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesnāt want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creatorās.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individualās personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what theyāre designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanloreās relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
im fucking crying
Why is there a diarrhea parasite outbreak in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to disease prevention and control.
Why is measles back in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including RFK Jr, cut vaccine and measles prevention funding and programs.
Why is the New World Screwworm infecting cattle in Texas, when it had previously been eliminated from the area?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Elon Musk, cut USAID funding, which in part worked to monitor and prevent screwworm outbreaks.
Why was there a flu outbreak in our armed forces?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Pete Hegseth, cut vaccination requirements for our armed forces, putting all of them at risk alongside our military readiness.
What contributed to the Covid outbreak?
Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to a pandemic prevention program in his first term because Barack Obama had created it.
āAmerica firstā sends its regards. Trump voters, please learn your lesson. And if you donāt, itāll be taught to you again with yet another diarrhea outbreak.
Please give credit to Matthew Cortland, the disabled lawyer and activist whose work is reflected in that last screenshot. They work hard on documenting what Trump and his cronies have been doing & they deserve credit.
To @vaspider's point, this otherwise useful Bloomberg article is sullied by them just taking an individual's work and repeating it without credit:
The US Food and Drug Administration had apologized, Taylor Farms said in a post on X. An agency lab test linking its produce to the countryā
Taylor Farms gave $1 million to a political action committee supporting the president last year. Chief Executive Officer Bruce Taylor had attended an event with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and hundreds of agriculture executives, members of Congress, and federal staff just days earlier, celebrating 250 years of American farming at Mount Vernon.
This take is definitely too hot for a lot of fans but Iām gonna say it anyway: Sherlock Holmes is a canonically queer character. What type of queer he is is up to interpretation, but he is canonically, explicitly Not Straight, and people who write him as an allosexual hetero man are the ones who are actually projecting their own headcanon onto him.
Iām 100% serious. Here are the canonical facts we have about his feelings on sex/romance:
- He says multiple times that he is not interested in women. When Watson comments on the attractiveness of a woman, Holmes responds that he ādidnāt noticeā.
- He is uninterested in marriage and remains a bachelor his entire life, and never expresses any regret or sadness over this.
- He states that he has ānever lovedā (in this context it is implied that he is specifically talking about romantic love.) He repeatedly expresses disdain for romance in general.
Thatās IT. That is ALL the canonical information we have about his sexuality. We know that he is capable of love in some sense, and Watson even explicitly says that Holmes loves him. But we never see any evidence that he has romantic feelings for women.
Any interpretation of Holmes as a heterosexual man directly contradicts all of the evidence we have about his sexuality. It assumes that everything he or Watson have ever said about his feelings on romance is a lie. The only interpretations of him that actually fit with all the facts are if heās aroace, gay, or some combination thereof.
Anyway Iām going to start referring to straight interpretations of Holmes as āstraight headcanonsā now. Holmes is canonically queer.

we do need to revisit the wording of "you can't have your cake and eat it too" because i don't think it clearly enough conveys that it's more that you can't simultaneously retain a cake and also get to consume it (which would render you cakeless). for years i was like But why not....it's my cake....?
this fucking problem is how they caught the unabomber
hey you should uh. elaborate. for my own personal satisfaction
the unabomber was pedantic about idiomatic phrases like "have your cake and eat it too" and rephrased it to "eat your cake and have it too" (which to be very fair makes sense). fast forward to when he starts writing manifestos. he uses the phrase word for word in his pedantic style and his brother (who has been keeping his eyes on the unabomber shit for obvious reasons) notices the phrase and is like "oh fuck that's my fucking brother no one else fucking says that" and calls in an FBI tip
Well you can't deliberately speak in a way nobody else does and also stay anonymous you know. Can't eat your cake and have it too.
