I feel like you can sort of tell how long (or not) someone has existed in fannish spaces by how outraged they get about things like this. Like rings in a tree trunk lol. I've been in so many fandoms. At least one, but often multiple at the same time, since I was a teenager. I've seen just. Everything.

Sex pollen. Mpreg. Incest. Monster fucking. Tentacles. Pairings like Snape/Hermione that would be crazy abusive and illegal if they were real. Wild kinks. The babygirlification of all kinds of villains. So much RPF (the 'I sincerely believe they are secretly a couple' kind and the 'this is fictional but it's fun to imagine they're in love' kind.)

You learn to just scroll past shit you don't like or unfollow people or filter tags. The tldr of fandom is that humans are weird as fuck. And creative, and unhinged, and traumatized, and talented. And amazing. And every single thing that you clutch your pearls about 'well surely someone doesn't want to read/write THAT!' - someone does. Probably lots of people do. And those people are perfectly normal. In their offline lives, they're parents and siblings and they have jobs and friends and they go about their lives and they don't cause any harm. And that's the sticking point. There's this really concerning, frankly highly Evangelical idea that if someone enjoys the wrong kind of fiction, they are obviously a Bad Person. But nothing is that simple, and thought crimes aren't real, and you definitely have some thoughts or ideas that someone else would find fucked up. You don't have to like every kind of fic that exists. I certainly don't. But shaming people for their harmless fantasies about fictional characters is so boring. I saw Goody Proctor enjoying a Toxic Ship! Good for you, I'll alert the pope.

re: aanya’s and rocky’s excellent posts—also want to point out that this is not a heated rivalry specific problem. its massive popularity has brought an influx of new “hockey” fans, some of whom are behaving like it’s their first day on earth and they’ve never heard of basic social etiquette or respect for themselves or others, but this is not a new problem in hockey, it’s just shining a massive spotlight on one that already existed. there’s that person who makes and sells the weird sexually charged shirts for the ducks, who the ducks actually hired to design merch for them. there was the kraken / booktok debacle. there’s whatever the hell is going on around those two little blond boys on the sharks. there was the girl who fake dated jack hughes. and that’s just the stuff ive seen in the last four years.

i’m not in the HR fandom, and i have also been pretty horrified by the behavior i’ve seen from a faction of its fans, but i think it’s unfair to pin this entirely on them when in reality it has more to do with the erosion of social norms and the fandom fourth wall across the board. and of course the rise of anti-intellectualism and conservative ideals we’re seeing in younger demographics.

rpf and crazy invested fans have existed since the beginning of time, but we used to abide by a social contract that kept fandom and the people associated with the media it revolved around separate and, crucially: safe. i don’t know how we can get back to that, but we desperately need to.

aanya's post really nails part of why the h/ated r/valry mania has been so frustrating. people who don't care about hockey coming into hockey spaces and insisting that they're representative of the fanbase! it has nothing to do with fandoms or with rpf or whether or not the show is good! it's girl math, it's bimbo movements, it's i'm just a girl, it's divine feminine, it's tradwife, it's giving up! like, no, you don't have to care about hockey to like the show. you don't have to like the show if you care about hockey. but it's so endlessly frustrating to see people assuming that all women and gay people interested in the sport, regardless of how long they've been here, are in that first group, because hashtag the girls and gay only care about hot guys and kissing. it's frustrating to see members of that first group responding to that by agreeing with the basic premise. stand up for each other. stand up for yourselves. girls only like football because of taylor swift. girls only like reading because of twilight and fifty shades. girls only like music because of boybands. girls only like hockey because of cute boys kissing. girls are stupid and can't do math and only like pink. you get that these are misogynist stereotypes, right? you get that, even if you do like taylor swift and twilight and boybands and boys kissing and pink? you understand that agreeing with and confirming those stereotypes out loud and directed at the people making them isn't a sneaky little 'win.' it's an insult. people are going to be insulted. i don't care if you like rpf more than hockey. that's fine! i'm not good at math! some things are bigger than your personal circumstances!

the thing about the way people go on and on about how smut and shipping ruins the ability to think about character or worldbuilding or whatever, is that this is inherently a skill issue. nothing better to tell you about a character and their most important internal neuroses (personal, social, cultural) than discovering how they like to fuck and who they want to fuck and the why of it all. such complainants should, rly speaking, read better smut.
