I never understood why gatekeeping (seems to be so/)is so pervasive when it comes to music. I'm sure it has roots in how common music is as an art form, how many people (especially young people) view the music they listen to as part of their identity, and so on, but I can't help but feel people are much too quick to exclude others for the most arbitrary and asinine reasons. You found a t-shirt at the thrift store that you thought looked cool and it happens to be band merch? Awesome! Maybe you wearing that shirt gets people checking out their stuff! You say you're a fan of an artist even though you only know a few of their songs? That's so cool, you've got so much more of their music to discover when you feel open to it!
Art is so deeply personal, there's no right or wrong way to enjoy it.

Will be blogging my thoughts into the ether.
We've heard the first two tracks before. Neither wowed me as singles, but we'll see how they set up the others.
Tomorrow Is Closed has strong The Strokes vibes!! I quite like it, and I think I'll only like it more with repeated listens.
Keeping You Around was another single, though I haven't listened to it a lot to be frank. It's very hip-hop inspired sounding to me, a bit dark. I like the broken machine reference, but this isn't too exciting IMO.
Holy mother of falsetto, Connor!! City Haunts comes out swinging, and doesn't let up! Those offbeat hits give it a real groove, and the bridge adds some nice triplets on that synth. Did not expect this track, but boy is it cool!
Do You Love Me Yet? keeps the energy high with a more synth-driven groove. It's got a very electronic sound to it, which sounds awesome. Love the harmonies on the vocals here. A metric modulation tells us that yes, this *is* a concept album. What a track this is /pos.
Members Only is the best song so far, as well as the heaviest IMO. The dynamics in this track are great, and I love the subversion at the end of the chorus!
Green Eyes :: Siena is a nice reprieve from the harder tracks. It's got a lot of chromatic movement (nice), really calling back to the ballads of yesteryear. Quite bittersweet, I like it.
80's sounding synths lead us into Foreign Language, a somewhat dizzying track. The chords in the verses lead us on a journey to somewhere unexpected, almost like they're in a foreign language. The choruses are more poppy and straight-forward, which gives it a nice contrast.
Talking To Myself is another calmer song; a very NBT take on something straight out of the Yamaha DX-7 age. It's a gloomy, defeatist take on an 'I miss you' song.
Pop The Balloon sounds like something straight out of Royal Blood's discography, but even darker. Lyrics written in the same headspace as Can You Afford To Be An Individual, I'm sure.
Then, another reminder we're listening to a concept album as we get to the midpoint. A chance to calm down, before the guitar solo ushers us back into the dark chorus. What a way to do an album closer.
I'll have to do some more listens, as well as properly dig into the lyrics, but I'm pleasantly surprised with this album. The singles were definitely the weakest tracks I feel. Would probably rank this higher than the OG Moral Panic.
