every Sunday, after church, from toddlerhood to 13 years old, our car would roll through downtown Raleigh, bound for home. If we were good, we’d beg to visit Krispy Kreme, already salivating in the church parking lot. We’d pass around and attempt to savor (though, we were too young to know self-control) the soft donuts. We’d stare at the conveyor belts (I liked the glaze waterfall) as they readied our order. Before I even learned to drive, my mom taught me a mnemonic for finding Krispy Kreme - PPKK. Where Peace and Person street meet, Krispy Kreme is there. When I got older, the visits to Krispy Kreme became more and more infrequent, until finally I left the church and they ceased altogether. But downtown Raleigh’s Peace Street was a prime hangout for my friends in middle school, and even in my adolescent rebellion, I kept my mom’s words in mind. How can I forget, years later, the glow of the neon? I’d sooner forget the sign in front of the store before the address of the place. PPKK.
