Somehow while decorating the tree in the cafeteria, he ended up with more garland wrapped around himself than what ended up on the tree. Even still, it was turning out pretty good, he thought. He spotted a child eyeing him and the tree, and took a step back to wave him forward. “You want to put the star on top?” He asked them with a grin, sliding a chair away from the nearest table to help the student up.  

“Hey, I see you over there.” He called out, after helping the student off the chair once the star was placed on top of the tree. “Want to help?”

Rose watched John carefully, smiling when he got himself wrapped up in the garland and even making a small laugh when he tried to get a young child to help. She didn’t realise she was staring, however, until John caught her.

Stepping out from the tray station, she gave a small shrug as she walked towards him. “Did the Doctor get you to help him?” she started, curious and wondering if it was more of John getting the Doctor to let him help. “And it depends, are you going to make me stand on a chair?” She grinned at him, placing her hand on her hip. “Thanks for decorating the tree though, it looks lovely so far.”

“I can’t believe it’s December,” Jack said, putting his feet up on the table in the staff room. “What’s everyone’s plans for the holidays? And who’s up for caroling?”

Rose took one glance over at Jack and shook her head before grinning into her phone. “Spending it with my Mum, and anyone else who wants to come over for her special ham. Want to come over for a bit on Christmas, Jack?” Sitting forward, she set her mobile down and gave him an appraising look. “Caroling though? Really? Yeah, yeah, count me in.”

TEXT MESSAGE ✉ JAMES

James: No no don't apologize. It was funny!

James: Good funny, you know. Not bad funny.

James: Nope! Not married. Quite, quite single, in fact! Total bachelor, that's me.

[ awkward pause ]

James: I don't suppose you're seeing anyone?

James: And you're never boring, Rose Tyler.

Rose: Then I take back my apologies!

Rose: Good! Really good, I mean... not good that you're not married... well unless you don't want to be.

Rose: Er, I just meant it's good that I wasn't stepping into someone elses shoes on accident.

Rose: nope! I'm very much single myself, haha.

Rose: Thanks, James. You're very fun to be around, too.

“That’s probably true. And don’t worry about it; I know exactly what you mean,” she said, smiling. She was starting to really like Rose. Maybe she’d need to hang out in the cafeteria more often.

“You’re welcome,” Martha said as she started to help push it. God, it was heavy! No wonder Rose was having so much trouble pushing it.

“I know! What could this possibly be?” she asked, shaking her head at Rose. “Of course. Same with you,” she continued, “Oh, that we do.”

Rose gave Martha a genuine smile before nodding her head and glancing down. “I have to say, I can’t believe we haven’t really talked before, since we’ve both been here a while.”

When they started to push the cart, Rose gave her best efforts and gave a grunt when they were only able to move it a few inches. Sighing and placing her hands on her hips, she let out a laugh before looking up at the other woman.

“I’m almost afraid to really look. Let’s go with the safe option of giant bags of flour? Maybe some pasta? I dunno, but let’s hope for that.” She paused and tilted her head for a moment as she looked at the cart. “Maybe we can try running at it?”

To be honest, I’m not big on birthdays, me. Or hosting parties, unless it’s for people I like… which so happens to be you lot. Just figured it’d be a good way to get everyone all acquainted again. And an opportunity to knock back a few. 

But I’ll never say no to a present, Rose. I’m sure I’ll like whatever you come up with – whether it be in the form of baked goods or a clever knock-knock joke. 

No? I guess I can understand. I used to love them up until I found out that my Mum was essentially regifting her old Body Shop lotions and sprays to me. She meant well, but after the fifth ‘Rose smelling like a rose’ thing got old pretty fast.

Brilliant! I’ll be sure to start making something for you, then. I can’t wait to see everyone and honestly, getting to knock back a few with friends sounds fab.

Then count me in any time you have a party! I always try to bring as much as I can, I hate feeling like the person who shows up with nothing to offer but takes everything.

Is there anything you’d like for your birthday? I’m not the best cook or baker, but I can certainly try. Unless you’d like a small gift? I can do gifts!

Rose: I was wondering if there was anything you'd like for your birthday? If it's food, I can always try to make it, you know, if you'd like.

Party at mine and Rory’s this Saturday, in honour of the birth of two of Britain’s Greatest achievements – Mister James Smith and Miss Clara Oswald. It’s a be there or be square event. If you can read this you’re invited. Presents are optional, attendance is not – yes, Doctor, that does mean you!

Roller Rinking + John and Rose

“Rose Tyler, that is just —” He started, in mock offense as if he was going to call her rude for suggesting such a thing before breaking out into a grin and changing course. “Brilliant.” He finished, a few staff members immediately coming to mind that he’d sometimes like to dodge. 

He let out a small noise of surprise when she quickened her pace and tugged him along, but was soon able to adjust his own speed so they were more equally match, but not before bumping into her slightly when he tried to dodge his first kid.  

“I know,” he agreed finally, frowning slightly as he thought of Mickey, who always seemed to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder whenever they interacted. John always acted like he didn’t notice, but.. it was definitely there, and he had no doubt that if that chip had a name, it’d be Rose Tyler. He almost smirked at his own internal pun. 

“I don’t know – you know me, Rose. Not really good with the talking myself, probably sound like a right hypo – wait, what?? You’ve got your eyes set on someone? Who?” 

“John Smith!” Rose started back, giving him the same tone he gave her. If there was ever two people who could sound like they were bickering or picking on each other all the time; it would be these two. Though sometimes, Rose wondered if it wasn’t John and Amy,

“See? You’ve gotten the hang of this! Before you know it, we could start doing those roller durbys people sometimes do.” She paused and gave it some thought, “Actually, you’d have to get more muscular and start shoving people. Maybe not the best sport for either of us.”

When they moved onto the subject about her and Mickey, Rose nearly stopped dead in her tracks and practically got them both to trip and to fall into each other. Had she really admitted that she liked James? No. Well, sort of. Not really. John still had yet to know who it was, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to spill any time soon.

John and Jack were always the ones who knew her secrets right away. Why should her crush on James be any different?

“I might.” She started, giving John as much of an aloof look as possible. “And you might  know him, but I don’t think the details are really all that important, do you? Because honestly, what’s going to amount from it? Nothing, probably. Nothing at all.” She was rambling and she knew it. So instead of answering him further, Rose just sped up again.

Rose smiled and Martha smiled back, hoping the staring wouldn’t be held against her.

“Yes, lovely to meet you, too. In all honesty, I think your name is lovelier than mine. It’s so simple, and when I think of roses I think of love and hope and…” She trailed off, embarrassed. “It’s lovely.”

“Ice cream? You’ll have to tell me when,” she said with a smile. She laughed, and said, “Let me try and help. i can’t make any promises, but maybe the two of us can get the job done?”

“Don’t worry about that,” she promised immediately. “We all have our things. I can get rather short-tempered as well, I’m afraid, especially around my stepmother. Or sensitive topics,” she added, then mentally kicked herself. Saying things like ‘sensitive topics’ is a surefire way for someone to stumble across one of her land mines, so to speak. She didn’t want Rose to hate her.

Rose let out a small laugh, grinning as such to Martha’s compliments. “I could stand here and tell you all day about how your name is equally lovely, but I think we’d try a little too hard to out flatter each other.”

She paused and realised how that might have come out. “Not that neither things we say are in-genuine, course not, but... you know what I mean, yeah?” Foot, meet mouth. Rose nearly smacked herself in the forehead before nodding at Martha’s question.

“Yeah, absolutely!” Secretly Rose was glad she was able to recruit more people to the canteen. It only meant she had more friendly faces to see and more foods to stock up on that she could hand out. “Thanks,” she nodded towards the cart as they began to move it.

“I still don’t get why it’s so heavy, I mean, it’s just food, right?” she peered around the cart at Martha, wondering if it really was just food and not anything crazy or conspiracy theory worthy. “Ah, yeah, no worries. Though if I ever cross a line or something, please tell me. I promise I won’t be hurt by it, I’ll understand.” She gave Martha a warmer and more genuine smile. “Besides, we all got our demons, yeah?”

Martha was staring as the cafeteria worker she couldn’t remember the name of attempting to push the food cart. She wasn’t proud of it, but she was.

Apparently, she’d been a little too obvious because the worker turned around and made it very clear what she needed. That snapped Martha back to attention.

“I’m not very strong, but I can try,” she said quickly. “And I’m really sorry; I rarely eat in the cafeteria so I’m afraid I’ve forgotten your name. I’m Martha.”

“It’s alright, I think the cart is just stubborn, really.” She attempted to give a gentler smile to the woman in hopes that she wouldn’t see her as a complete arse. 

Rose glanced away for a moment and let out a soft laugh before turning back to Martha. “Rose. It’s lovely to properly meet you. I’ve seen you in the staff lounge sometimes and sometimes in passing but I’ve never actually got to meet you. You have a lovely name, Martha.”

She grinned, this time more genuinely. “And I don’t blame you for not wanting to eat in the canteen, it’s not always that great. Though, I do suggest stopping in when we’ve got ice cream. It’s really quite good.” Letting out a sniffle and turning her head to cough, Rose gave the stubborn cart another push to no avail. “Its like this thing hates me!”

She paused and gave Martha a quick glance. “And sorry for being so surely, I promise I’m really not like that... all the time.”

Rose was stubborn in her attempt to telling the other people who worked in the canteen that she could handle the large food cart on delivery day. Under normal circumstances, she probably could, but since she was currently fighting a cold (darn those changing of the seasons!) she couldn’t help but miserably blame her lack of strength on it.

Grunting and heaving, Rose let out a heavy sigh before placing her hands on her hips. “Look, I’d either really appreciate you helping me or just getting lost because it’s really unsettling that you’ve been watching this whole time and haven’t done a thing.” Turning around to stare she raised a brow and made a face. “So... what’s it gonna be?”

“What’s more adventurous than dodging kids with the possibility of running into walls —” He started, teasing at first before his eyes went wide with realization and immediately he wrinkled his nose. “I’ve just described our every day life at school, haven’t I? That does make this perpetually less exciting.” He muttered with disappointment. 

He recovered rather quickly though, not ready to let it ruin their night. It’d still be fun, he was determined.  

Once he was steady – or at least, steady enough, he considered Rose’s explanation about Mickey and nodded solemnly. “Well – You are quite special, can’t say I blame him,” He winked, trying to make light of the situation, and knowing that Rose wouldn’t take it as serious flirting. Nothing that would make it awkward between them.  

“Yikes – okay, if anyone knows anything about awkward, it’s me,” And boy did he, especially when it came to a certain brunette at Coal Hill. “Maybe it’s not a bad idea to bring it up on one of the movie nights, get it out of the way?” 

Rose let out a laugh as John tried to explain about his adventures before she reached out to try to catch him from falling on his face. “Oh!” Bringing up her hands she covered her eyes before peaking over them to look at the damage. “But yeah... it does sound a bit too much like being at work.” She conceded putting her hand out again for him to grab.

“Who knows? We could learn some skills here and then be able to dodge kids and co-workers we don’t like, like ‘that’.” With her free hand, she brought it up and snapped it before grinning at him.

When he complimented her, she gave him a dry look before rolling her eyes and laughing. “Yes, I may be special but I don’t want to be his special. We all know he can find someone better suited for him.” Rose quickened her pace as she began to gently tug John along.

“Hm.. do you think I really should?” Turning her head to look at him, Rose raised a brow. “I mean... I could tell him that I have a thing for someone else but... though that’s true, I don’t think he’d want to hear it.” Nearly losing her balance, Rose let out a small shriek before catching herself against John. “Sorry!”

Snoring his amusement, Rory nodded at that. The real reason was of course much more boring than that, from what he recalled – parents, and aunts, and job relocations, but he liked Rose’s conclusion better. “Could be, yeah.” He nodded again, in response to her question. Big personalities, that they were. And while at times it could be… terrifying, he found (when it came to Amy, at least) all that attitude was endearing. In a way. “Classy bride of Frankenstein.” He leaned back, considering it. “I think you’d be great.” He had no doubt she had the creativity to bring it all together successfully.

Rose continued to smile at him, letting a laugh out before sitting back and nodding at him when he agreed with her. She did take note that he wasn’t as vocal as her when it came to discussing the local red head’s personalities. For a brief moment she wondered if she had been a bit rude. But in any case, Rory was moving on and so she would too. “Thank you,” she smiled again. “Though the next time Halloween rolls around, remind me not to get a costume idea that involves a corset. Stuffy little things, they are.”
