daphne ryu.
Daphne ended up laughing instead of groaning at oh, Canada? if only because of Chrysan’s giggle and the red tinge her cheeks had taken on. “Is it because I don’t add eh to the end of every sentence?” She joked, her soft laugh trailing into a low hum of agreement. As much as she ripped on it, Vesta was home now. The restlessness was less about the city and more about Daphne not wanting to feel stuck, but that wasn’t something to be remedied by simply moving somewhere. Both of the answers Chrys gave her sparked something in Daphne enough for her to sit up straight, though she stomped her enthusiasm back down where it belonged as soon as she realized they were turning into where she figured was their destination. “Sweet. You bring the baby in, I’ll carry the food?” Though it came out as a suggestion, Daphne was already gathering the handles on the plastic bags and pushing the passenger’s side door open. It was certainly a nicer building than the one she lived in, not that her apartment was garbage — considering her spending habits, it was what she could comfortably afford without stretching herself thin. “So, your parents still live around here?” She asked curiously, recalling the number of times her mother asked if she could at least come visit her, even without her siblings and step father. Unfortunately, her mother was just as stubborn as Daphne was.
She nodded at Daphne’s instruction, unbuckling her seatbelt before moving to carry her dog from the backseat. It wasn’t everyday where she would take someone to her place, not like it required any special occasion for her to -- more so that her social battery would drain completely after her long hours at work and teaching dance classes. But there was something about her encounters with Daphne that made her forget about those concerns. “Yeah, I actually still live with my mum,” she admitted hesitantly, slightly embarrassed. Not that she was still relying on her parents’ money at twenty-four. In fact, it was the opposite. She was the one who had been paying for her mother and brother all this time. It was more of the connotation that came with it, and she didn’t want Daphne to assume otherwise. “And my brother, he’s around too,” she quickly added, as if it helped remedy her uneasiness. Stepping inside the apartment, Chrysan returned her puppy into his crate before turning back to greet her mother, “Hey mum, this is Daphne. She’s a friend.” She led her friend towards her room, taking a seat on the carpet. “Do you want me to turn on the TV? We could watch something while we’re eating, or just chilling is fine too. To think of it, you haven’t told me about where you want to travel anyway.”
