Grace's family is not perfect. They argue a lot and always have different opinions about everything, but Grace was loved since a kid. His mother [Holly] held him through hard times and taught him how to drive. His older brother[Courtland] was quiet, but he always listened to him and went to all his school presentations. His twin brother[Colt] was mean sometimes, but he always protected Grace. His grandparents [March and Healy] were cringe and jerks sometimes, but they remembered every detail of Grace's stories.
Simon is a kid created in a Catholic community. His mother died when he was 4 years old, and his dad married one of the missionaries a few months later. His family is normal in the public eye, but behind closed doors, they are awful. His dad always says Simon is a sinner like his mother and makes him do physical labor as a way to be forgiven by the horrible person he is, and when Simon commits a simple mistake, he is beaten. His stepmother hates his appearance and forces him to change because he is so similar to his bio mom, and besides this, she tries to control everything he does.
Rhyland Grace and Simon Butcher met in the last year of high school on a science project. They started to work in the library, but when they became closer, Grace invited Simon to his house, and after Simon convinced his family, they went.
Grace's House is different from everything he sees as normal; there is no religious decoration, and it is so warm and lively. There are so few rules, and when they are broken, everything that Grace's mom does is talk to them. Simon thinks this is heaven and that his dad talks so much, but every time he spends there, Simon feels like a sinner who doesn't deserve this type of happiness and soft life. This sour feeling becomes more frequent when he sees Grace, and his heart yearns to hold him close.
The science fair is a success, but their friendship is declining because Simon's mental health is getting worse. Simon fights with Grace over every single thing and then stops eating for long periods because he feels guilty about the way he is with Grace. The guilt is getting worse every day because his brain keeps telling him that Simon is just like his father, a sinner incapable of loving without hurting others.
The prom is getting closer, and Simon lies to his family about asking a girl out. He goes to prom alone and watches Grace dance with a pretty girl. Simon knows this is the last time they are going to see each other, so he is reckless and confesses his love in the last moment of the night.
After that night, he packs everything and takes a bus to San Francisco, where he discovered his mom used to live, and supposedly, her family still lives...
