Something a student drew me

Last week a student drew me. I didn't ask her to. She just sat at her desk during free time and drew a stick figure with messy hair and a really big smile. At the bottom she wrote, in shaky kindergarten handwriting, 'Ms. C is happy even on Monday.'

I didn't know she noticed things like that. That I smile on Mondays. That my hair is messy. That she wanted to draw me at all.

I taped it to the wall behind my desk. It's still there.

Something about that drawing stayed with me. A kid paid attention to something small, and she turned it into something. So I started doing the same thing — paying attention to small moments, and turning them into little designs for my classroom. Not fancy ones. Just things that made me, and hopefully my kids, feel a bit more at home.

The cold coffee on the desk

I imagine a classroom sometimes. Not as a teacher. Just from the outside looking in.I picture the kids' drawings taped to the wall. A stack of folders nobody has touched since Tuesday. A little chair pushed out of place. And on the corner of the desk, a coffee cup. Half-full. Cold. Been there since the morning.I don't know why I think about that cup so much. Someone poured it with every intention of coming back to it. Then a kid needed help with scissors. Then another couldn't find their lunchbox. Then the whole morning was gone.I think it's because that cup is so ordinary. Every teacher I've ever known has one. Something they started for themselves and never got to finish. The coffee. The cold tea. The five minutes of quiet they were going to have before the bell rang. All those small things they put down and never picked up again. I've been drawing them lately. Not the big heroic moments. Not the inspirational quotes. The stuff that gets left behind when someone spends their whole day thinking about other people.If you're a teacher and there's something cold on your desk right now — what was it supposed to be, before the day took it away from you?

The glue stick with no cap

I was cleaning out my desk yesterday and found a glue stick. The cap was gone. It was completely dried out.And I laughed, because it made me think of Mrs. Chen — my kindergarten teacher. I don't remember much from being five, but I remember her. She let me cry when I missed my mom. She tied my shoelaces a thousand times. She probably went through a hundred glue sticks just like this one.I sat down and drew something inspired by her. Just a small thing. Not for sale, not for anything.
