Prof. Pasko Kuzman, a renowned archaeologist, the former head of the National Museum and a former advisor to Prime Minister Gruevski. Although many see him as the ideologist who coined the link between modern day Macedonia and the ancient Empire of Alexander the Great, Kuzman himself denies his role in forging the narrative. He is, however, a dreamer and an eccentric, often likened to a local Indiana Jones. The city of Skopje has been razed and rebuilt four times throughout its turbulent past. On 26 July 1963, the area was struck by an earthquake that destroyed 80 percent of the capital, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving 200,000 more homeless. The international community rushed to help, but no master plan for Skopje’s reconstruction was ever finalised. Fifty years later, the conservative government initiated a nation-wide construction scheme in order to bring back a sense of connection with the area’s alleged ancient roots.
