Last week the students were researchers, they were doing research about rivers of the world. This afternoon, the students are botanists! They’re on a journey to find new plants. I tell them the legend of Ayung river story. No need to say, they’re having fun! Well, me too! It’s a great feeling when you can teach English while having fun in nature 😸💞
We went to Kul-kul farm yesterday to get better understanding of permaculture. Maria, the co-founder, asked us something like this 'who thinks that it's the right thing to learn more about sustainability? Who thinks that recycling is the right thing to do?' And all of us raised our hand. Then Maria went in, 'you know what, that's not a trait that everybody have.' Now how we as a person who's aware of the importance , could transfer it to other people who's not having that. The answer of what's bridging Awareness to Action is Knowledge. When we're knowledgeable about something, we'll be able to transfer it. Then what I see is the process of acquiring the knowledge is different to every person. Someone acquires 'knowledge' from loss, someone from book, someone from meeting another person(s). And in life, we keep being faced with opportunities to acquire the knowledge. Through challenges, problems, or perhaps even happy moments. Now the control is in our hands. Would you use the knowledge? Or would you ignore it? Would you turn it into action? Or would you run from it? (at The Kul Kul Farm)
Yesterday we had a Curriculum Design with Ibu Emily, and the GEC participants are separated into 3 groups; primary, middle, and high school. I was joining middle school with Ka Giyan, Ibu Rachael, Renata, and JF. There's one challenge that Ibu Emily gave us, it's to define communication according to our group, and we have to present it in a fun and engaging way. After we brainstormed, I remember about these emoticons 🙈🙉🙊and I asked my friends to act like that. I made up a short "play" to present our ideas. 🙈open your eyes, 🙉 open your ears, 🙊open your mouth, let's build connections cause that's what communication is🤹🏻♀️🎤
Those soap bars look and smell like delicious cakes for sure! But do you know that it's made of used cooking oil?! Crazy isn't it? Every Wednesday, GS students have Jalan-Jalan session which basically learning about something or doing service outside of the classroom. Experiential learning is the core essence in GS. When planning a lesson, teacher have to put emphasis on the way they teach, not what they teach. So we went to Lengis Hijau in Denpasar to find out how this NGO turn used cooking oil into biodiesel. So far, GS has 4 biobus to pick and drop the students or staffs from some meeting points to school. This is something remarkable and inspiring to see. Just as GS "tagline", community of learners making our life sustainable, this young NGO also try to give better alternatives for the people and the environment. Eventho I see the irony as they used a lot of electricity from coal to create renewable energy. But of course, it's a big step and something to be appreciated. Langkah demi langkah, Ibu Sanne said. They offer workshops to schools and also collaborate with villas and hotels around Bali and Lombok. Hopefully one day I could bring my KKC students there. Hmm, thinking of that.. it can be anytime soon! 😃
This is primary school art room at @greenschoolbali. We had a session of Mindfulness with Ibu Karen. The first thing that caught my eyes is the nature elements that GS teacher used in introducing arts to the students. Seeing the compass model into practice was something that I've been eager to know at GS. I'll share about the compass model after this. After we found our seats, Ibu Karen put black sand on the table. She told us to touch the sand, feel its texture, and just play with it. I find it so interesting that she use sand as one of the tools to get the students creative. When I was a primary kid, the teacher taught me to draw mountains with the sun rising in the middle and with rice fields and roads in front of them. Maybe some of you can relate. Back to the practice of mindfulness through art, Ibu Kate gave us a small piece of paper where we could draw the modified Zen pattern on it. When the students draw, they're focused on themselves and what they do in the present moment. They hear the natural sounds around them while drawing, and GS is definitely rich of that calming nature sounds. The drawing itself isn't for show and tell. Instead it's for the student herself/himself. It's helping the students to be quiet, to have a moment of silence, and be mindful.
This morning we had a discussion on Prof. Zimbardo's prison experiment which later lead us to the discussion of bystander effect and spotlight effect. The bystander effect means the tendency not to help out when you are part of the group and the spotlight effect means the feeling that speaking up or acting will bother other people. Seeing this from an introvert perspective, I do feel like I've been in this spotlight effect many times. I have a mixed feelings when people expect me to be more "open". Especially as a teacher and young activist, where many of your colleagues are extroverts and just have so much to talk about. I find it energy consuming and makes me even not wanting to talk more. But I realized that I don't want to be the bystander either. So I need to get up and fly away from my comfort zone. As Ibu Sanne said, "outside of comfort zone, that's where magical things happen."

Somehow I remember a discussion I had with one of GS parents. I remember I told her that being considerate of others and being open minded is a common sense. Why people don't understand that? And she said, 'wait Adela, you might think it's common sense for others, but it's not. There are some, no, many people who don't understand that.' It hit me hard. Like, that's so much true. People can get extreme, killing each other because of 'their beliefs', people can do anything unthinkable. It's scary, yet amazing how powerful your mind is. I'm not telling to spread love, peace, and kindness to others first. Let's start with me. Let's start with our very own self. And when we're ready, when we're 'knowledgeable' we'll pass those things to others with our actions. (at Sanur Beach, Bali Island)
I'm happy to be surrounded by these incredible people on the journey of making a sustainable world. Every time I'm eyeing a job opportunities, I always look for great organizations who have an abundant potentials. Potentials to improve the live of others and of course myself as a young professional. From @excellence.english.studio to @gskulkulconnection I learned a lot. I'm more than thankful for the opportunities I've had so far. Especially to YSEALI that sponsored a year internship at @greenschoolbali. I'm feeling so grateful today. "Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?" (Q.S. Ar-Rahman)

Today I'm so thankful for having such beautiful-hearted friends around me. It's so funny as the day start with Ibu Sanne talking about giving me surprise to KKC team this afternoon right in front of me 😂 she thought I was Jidha lol. I also didn't join some of the GEC sessions today as I have a new student who wants to join middle school Quest!! So proud of him of being brave! While waiting for him this afternoon, I had a really great discussion with Ibu Melanie about religion and culture. Basically discussing how can we create a better future with mutual understanding and respect. And today my students have cooking class with Ka Ayu, we made brownies which means another cake for me! Lol. It was unintentional to plan for cooking lesson at the same day of my birthday 😂 Then just when I'm about to end the class, my dearest person came with a home-made cheesecake, my all time favorite. Lastly, after dinner my new friends, great and inspiring educators from every place in the world singing birthday day song in their languages 😆 Surrounded by friends and loved ones, I couldn't ask for more! Thank you also for my friends who sending me birthday wishes from far far away!! I miss you and love you guys so much!! 💞💞💞
