Brown, dead leaves. Quiet, misty roads. Corn fields as far as the eye can see. Dusty buildings, and cracked, dirt paths, and murky, deep water. People come and go, but no one ever leaves Cinderridge, a small town surrounded by bleak farmland and dying, looming forests, for good. Something always draws you back. The warm, flickering streetlamps, and decaying church always linger in the back of your mind, drawing you back, or urging you to stay.

Mysterious disappearances that can’t be explained. Ghosts apparitions seen in the dead of night. Dozens and dozens of crows dropping dead in a field. Too many bodies found in Lake Dread. Events like these have recently become a common occurrence, but the citizens of Cinderridge simply sweep them under the rug. If you can’t see it, it can’t see you. If you ignore a problem, it will simply go away. That’s the mentality of the people here. But you can’t forget about lost lives. You can’t forget the faces of the missing, the dead, the forgotten. You can’t sweep ghosts under the rug.

But the sins this town have committed are nothing compared to the horrors lying just under their noses, waiting to be uncovered…

Inspired by Twin Peaks, Midnight Mass, Stranger Things, and the works of Stephen King, CINDERRIDGE is a southern/midwestern gothic horror roleplay, set in the small town of Cinderridge in 1979. We have 3.2.3 rating, and are open to members 18+. In old-school terms, we would be considered an intermediate to primarily advanced writing community, or “semi-literate”. We welcome roleplayers of any skill level, and love group scenes and character driven plots full of mystery, suspense, and dread.

What’s New?

• Chapter Two has officially begun, starting with Episode One: Changes. People are continuing to go missing, and the people of Cinderridge have started to take matters into their own hands...

• The Everetts are hosting their annual Bonfire out at Calico Farm. Everyone is invited to enjoy a candy apple, some homemade fire, and live music. 

• There’s a new face in town! We welcomed Emmanuel Marlow, a priest played by  Giancarlo Esposito. 

Overheard in Cinderridge

• Solomon Rawlins was the last person to go missing in the long string of disappearances. But some say they heard gunshots near the Gas ‘n’ Go late one night...

• Jasper Brooks & Abel Buckley started a very public fight at the Everett’s bonfire. Both men were stopped by Sheriff Buckley before any serious injury could take place. Yikes.

• Sheriff Buckley has been heard to be keeping later and later hours in an attempt to solve the disappearances plaguing the town. Some say that he doesn’t know how to handle the case, and others believe a curfew might be put in place soon...

So, you’re writing a thing, and you need to name a character. And, as we all know, naming a character is a giant pain in the ass. I offer this list of shit I use pretty regularly, for this purpose.

Behind the Name (The etymologies are weird as fuck, in a few places, but it’s great if you’ve got a name and need to find other names that are from or derived from the same culture/language)

Behind the Surname (BTN for family names)

Academy of Saint Gabriel Medieval Names Archive (This is the go-to for medieval names in Europe and the Near East. Hardcore scholarship and a distinct lack of fucking around.)

Kate Monk’s Onomastikon (The original internet name resource.)

The Soldier in Later Medieval England (Actual names from English military rolls around the Battle of Agincourt)

England’s Immigrants (Non-native residents of England, 1330-1550)

Discord Roleplay Help

We’ve been asked a few times how a group roleplay on Discord actually works, and so we’ve put together a guide to let you know what to expect, and what is expected of you as a writer in a group roleplay on Discord!

What Is Discord?

Discord is a free application for deskptop, web, and mobile, that is used to host detailed chatrooms, called servers, for any size group, as a space to chat, share pictures, and build a community. It’s a brilliant communication tool, and is the perfect platform for managing a roleplay. It looks a little intimidating at first, but is incredibly easy to use, and very user friendly. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the admin team if you’re having trouble navigating!

Why Discord?

Long story short? Community. Everything happens in the server, from plotting to OOC chatting, to roleplaying, and it means the roleplay as a much tighter sense of community than on Tumblr, or a forum. You can easily keep up with what everyone is doing, as well as your own plots, and it means you have everything you need in one place. The actual roleplaying isn’t dissimilar to roleplay on a forum or Tumblr, writing is exactly the same, and in some cases, it’s actually easier to reply to your partner(s) on Discord than it is on other platforms. It’s also a lot easier to organise group scenes, with lots of writers, for example fun party scenes, or big, dramatic finales. 

What To Expect When You Join Our Discord Server

You won’t be able to see all of the channels (chatrooms in a server) in our server immediately, and so it might look a little empty, or like you’ve done something wrong, but we promise that you’re in the right place! 

When you join the server, you will only be able to see our Foyer, and Application Centre. Here you can read our rules, say hello, and put in your application. Our applications are for writers, not characters, so it’s even easier to get started and gain access. Our application process is pretty similar to standard, so it should be an easy way to ease into the Discord style. 

Once you’ve been accepted, you’ll gain access to the majority of the server. This may look a little bit intimidating, but we have a map of the server to help you navigate. You can collapse sections (demonstrated below) to make things less overwhelming, if you need to. 

From here, you can read all of our roleplay information, and submit your character. The process is almost identical to the application process, except we don’t require a writing sample/audition for your character, just their info! 

Once your biography has been accepted, you’ll have access to everything else, including the chanels that you will be roleplaying in. We have different sections for the different parts of Cinderridge, and then individual channels for each location/building. You can see an example below. 

Nicknames & Role Assignment 

When your biography has been accepted, we ask that you change your nickname on our server as your ooc/ic name(s). For example, my name is Lottie, and I will be playing Abel, and so I change my nickname to Lottie || Abel. We don’t mind exactly how you do this, and you can even include a cute emoji if you want to, as long as the format is ooc name, then ic name. You can see a tutorial on how to do this below. 

We have a channel called #role-assignment, which is where you can self-assign roles to let other members know your age, pronouns, and writing style. A role is a tag/label you are given on a server, which changes the colour of your name, and, sometimes, what access you have to channels. Users can hover over other users names to see what roles they have. There’s a guide on the server as to how to do this. 

Roleplaying On Discord

Roleplay threads happen in location channels. Writing a response on Discord works exactly the same as a semi-literate/literate roleplay on other platforms. At Cinderridge, we write in third person, and ask that our members are comfortable writing at least two paragraphs (including lines of dialogue). You can see an example of a thread below from two of our staff members, Lottie and Bec, playing Abel and Rafi.

Here is a list of shortcuts and general tips for Discord formatting!

You can use *words* to create italicised text. You can use **words** to create bold text. You can use ***words*** to create bold & italicised text. You can use __words__ to create u͟n͟d͟e͟r͟l͟i͟n͟e͟d͟ underlinedtext. You can use >words to create a | quote block. You can use >>>words to create | multi-line block. You can use ~~words~~ to create strike through text. You can use ||words|| to create a spoiler (your text will be  shown as a black box, which is clicked on to reveal the text) You can use _ _ to create a blank space.

!!!! You can press shift+enter to create a new line. Be careful when starting a new line, as pressing enter without shift will send your message. !!!!

hello, i hope this isn't a bother but i've been seeing rps talking about the '3.2.3' rating lately and i'm just kinda wondering what it means?

Hello nonnie!

Not a bother at all! The rating system lots of rps use is the RPG Rating system, which you can find here.

The numbers stand for three categories, Language, Sex, and Violence, and is a way of letting potential members know how explicit each topic will be. A 0 rating means that the topic is not permitted, a 1 rating means that the topic is allowed but very limited, a 2 rating means that the topic is allowed with some limitations, and a 3 rating means that the topic is allowed with no limitations.

So, for example, our rating is 3.2.3, which means that in Cinderridge, Swearing and Mature Language is permitted, Sexual Content is permitted with some limitations (fade to black, not described in detail), and explicit Violence is permitted.

Hi :) Is the character master list in the server accurate? I just want to make sure I don’t apply for the same fc as someone else!

Hello nonnie! Our character master list gets updated on Thursdays, so it's possible that the master list isn't 100% up to date when you see it. You do, however, get full access to our biography channel after your application, so you can double check your fc isn't already in play there! You can always @ a staff member, or send us an ask, if you're worried about using a fc someone else has, and we can check against our records to see if it's in use.
