Repertoire so far
this article is about a community led photography project in the 70's. I love these images and the concept. Obviously I am not going to be really going down this route, but I hope that aspects of the scenes I create will come from the people and community I am representing. Either way I think it is very interesting especially for the time.

Even though we think of colonialism as a remote past, the practice of domination over another group of people continues to exist through different forms. When we were discussing about colonialism a few weeks ago, I was reminded of this article I read in an anthropology class. In Lutz and Collin’s…
External urban space Leeds photography
chantal akerman domestic space
Frida Kahlo painting herself in bed ,while suffering from a being bed ridden. I think its a great image of the internal reflective space, introspection, "feminine" creativity (or at least ascribed as feminine by patriarchy) .. I think it has parallels to people with mental health issues as well as physical. It makes me think about people creating space even within restrictions, through individuality, being creative. In a way you can see this as a form of resistance to the constraining nature of internal space..
I was thinking about the concept of the feminine-internal and masculine-external space that is portrayed a lot in Chantal Akerman Films. I started to think about the positive and negative aspects of both extremes.. the claustrophobia of internal space, the obsessiveness, ritual, constraint and labour of domestic space BUT ALSO the Nurturing, Personal, Private, safe, comforting, warm, individualised internal space ..... and then the alienation, coldness, tough, heavy, dangerous and also restrictive aspects to external urban space... but also the freedom, autonomy, anonimity.. and also just the SPACE available for movement etc. When researching that I found these photographs by Miru Kim, who is exploring decaying urban space, time and the body. But I think the photos are also a good example of contrasting masculine, hard external space with the vulnerable, naked, female body, removed of identity and individuality (clothing).. she in a way is physically contrasting the enviroment, but she is also kind of stripped of what binds her to domestic space, gender, and identity, you get this sense of freedom.. but you also get this sense of what she may have lost. You can feel the alienation and lack of identity and community. Below is a quote from an article about her.
she “wanted the figure to be without any cultural implications or time-specific elements–a simple way to represent a living body inhabiting these decaying, derelict spaces.” She decided to title this series of photographs “Naked City Spleen”, referencing Charles Baudelaire’s Paris Spleen poetry of urban alienation, Naked City being the nickname for New York City and the spleen embodying the melancholia and inertia that come from feeling alienated in an urban environment.
spaces film project
So the full film is made pretty much, just doing some final tweeks. I am going to write more about my process here but here is a summary. I initially started out thinking about masculine and feminine space, inspired by Chantal Akerman films, I was really thinking about Internal space and External space and how different genders are socialised and mobilise in these spaces. I explored these spaces by researching online other artists who have explored these issues, as well as generally searching images associated with combinations of keywords that made me think about different spaces (domestic, gender, male, female, masculine, feminine, alienation, liberation, constraint, ritual, obsession, safety, class etc). I also went around Leeds exploring different spaces and how they made me feel, as well as how they felt in terms of gender, class etc.. observing how different people engage with space. I took a range of photographs. This started me thinking about what belongs and doesn't belong in those spaces and how this should be challenged, portrayed, and/or reflected in different ways. I researched the lenses, technology used in documentary photography that I thought represented these spaces in ways I found interesting. Thought about how I might use technology etc. I also spent some time thinking about how space is divided between public and private. I made some color images that explored this division. But.. I decided not to go in this direction. Although I found it interesting. Istarted to feel more interested in reflectin how space and hour relationship to it changed depending on the type of people we are.. out health, our age, gender etc.. Things I thought about were what other artists have dealt with this and how could Ido it differently. Who did I want to represent. How was I to avoid being overly stereotypical and contrived in how I represent these issues.. for example.. how to avoid perpetuating gender stereotypes about womens space, mens space. One way I avoided this was by having a diversity of genders, sexualities, class etc.. represented.. including people who challenged the conventional stereotypes... but not merely by doing the opposite.. but showing complex nuances to gender/age, and also mental health... for example: a female weightlifter (not typically a feminine pursuit, but still manifesting a physical obsessive/fantatism that has parallels with more feminine relationships to the body, but in a different modern slant), mixing some masculine and some feminine attributes. I also explored sound and audio. I wanted to include the diegetic noise of the space. But Sometimes I wanted to go further by fading into soundtrack music in parts and manipulating the audio. Playing with our relationship to the space/time/memory. Other decitions I made were to do with focal length, shot width, composition, editing, and color (I decided to go black and white, explained in more detail on another post, link will be posted here).
Discover a workflow for sending your Adobe Premiere Pro sequences to Adobe Audition - perfect for creating a comprehensive audio mix of your film or video project!
This is how I am editing audio for my spaces film. I send the whole sequence to Audition with a video preview. So I can change it all smoothly without the need to go back and forth, plus having all the options for effects, clean up, distortion, echo, compression, filters, reverb etc.. the thing you have to be careful of though is when cutting out parts because this will mess with the whole timing of the sequence.. so basically don't alter length timing of the ORIGINAL (don't stretch it, don't cut out chunks.. you better off doing this in premiere afterwards.
Audition Effects - Blending layers of sound
So to lend layers of sound, like it you want to add sound effects, speech that are recorded seperately, soundtrack etc.. but you want to to work together.. sometimes you might want to make vocals sounds like they are in a room, or you might want to make them tinny to sound like it on the phone, or you want to put music to sound like its coming from a radio.. or perhaps your trying to balance a really tinny recording with a really bass heavy studio recording here are some effects I am using to try and so this.:
Phone/walkie talkie/intercom/radio etc: Process Effects-->Filters-->FFT Filter
For phone effects, have had luck with "Telephone: Receiver".
For walkie talkie/radio comm effects, "Telephone: Voicemail" or "OnHold 400". For staticy sound, you can overlay it by going to Special-->Distortion.
loudspeaker effects,"OnHold 400" and then overlaying the entire thing with the reverb effect of your choice, depending on how echoey you want the loudspeaker to sound.
Volume equalization: Real-time Effects-->Amplitude-->Dynamics Processing, I prefer to make a custom preset for this, but started by using "Compander" to balance out the levels of speech making it better for overlaying music while making voice/speech sound stronger overall. If you have a tinny microphone, the dynamics processor will usually boost the sound quality.
If you have a condenser microphone or your recording sound through your DSLR when shooting, sometimes it picks up all the little gross sounds your mouth makes, from saliva,, teeth clenching etc. which is nasty.. this is a nice quick fix for little unwanted sounds.
Making the whole thing sound nice: Real-time Effects-->Amplitude-->Multiband Compressor. Definitely mess around with the sliders until you like the sound, but start out by trying the "Broadcast" or "Pop Master" or Raise Vocals presets.
I used this website to get a BPM to find a song that matches a song playing the background of the pre-party video... I couldn't find the original song because its and obscure mix and plus I might have to get permission to use it. So I want to find a song with the same tempo to mix in. So the dancing and moving, toe tapping etc is in rhythm with the song. You can also find music which meets the tempo in several free creative licence music website and search by tempo. One example is the vimeo music store https://vimeo.com/musicstore. So I am hoping to find a good song which matches the rhythm on there.
