Saturday Nov. 15
Alma took the bus from London (bless her) to visit me in Edinburgh. She arrived at 6:45 in the morning and we didn’t stop until 10pm that night. I took her all over Edinburgh. So firts we went to Snax cafe and got a breakfast to fuel us for the day. Then Arthur’s Seat, Holyrood Park, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle Terrace, Elephant Cafe, Grassmarket, various alleyways, the Meadows, dinner at my flat, and then over to the movie theater to see The Imitation Game (which was utterly fantastic). At the end of the day we totaled up everywhere we had walked throughout the city and we walked a whopping 14 miles. It was insane. But so worth it. We crammed all the sites of Edinburgh into a day. Freaking fantastic. I still feel really proud of ourselves for that! Unfortunately Alma had to leave the next morning :( I walked her to the bus station and said my goodbyes. I wasn’t too sad though because my train tickets had been bought for months to visit her in London then following weekend. After dropping Alma I made my way back to my flat and finished a paper that was due the next day, like a boss.
November 21-23 (Friday - Sunday)
This is the weekend that I took the train out to visit Alma in London. I left Waverley Station at 2:30pm and arrived at Putney station at 7:30pm. From there Alma and I pretty much continuously missed each other for about an hour. Both of us can only use our phones when there is Wifi. So I was wondering up and down Putney street until like a beacon in the darkness I see someone walking towards me wearing a red scarf. I yell a choice expletive, which Alma acknowledges and we run towards each other like a scene from Baywatch but with many more layers and it’s sorta raining. So glad we found each other. I was at the point where I was just going to try and take a bus to her campus and hope she would eventually return there and let me in to her dorm. But beside the point, we found each other and made our way to Rhoehampton University. After I put all my stuff down Alma made dinner and we watched an episode of How to get Away with Murder before going to bed at a (semi) reasonably hour.
Saturday Nov. 22
The next morning we woke up and made our way to the Barnes Station where I bought a day Oyster card. Literally the best purchase of the whole trip. For 8.90 pounds I had a pass for the Tube, the Train, and the buses. Probably paid itself off at least 4 times. But we did so much in London. Solid 12 hours on my feet. We went to numerous sites (pictures on my Facebook) and I saw more of Van Gogh’s works in the National Gallery. I was able to see Sunflowers, Van Gogh’s Chair, and Wheatfield with Cypresses (one of my new favorites, I really enjoy his Wheatfield works). After the National Gallery we stopped at the TARDIS, Baker Street and then made our way to Notting Hill and walked through the Portobello Market. It was sprawling. I got a really cool art print of a painting of the famous scene from The Matrix. You know, where Neo stops all the bullets in mid air? And then there was this stand that was selling Donuts and the like. Alma, Christy, and I all agreed that we would buy one and then split it but then the lady started yelling, “REDUCED TO ONE POUND EACH. REDUCED!” And before we knew it we each had a donut of our own. I basically inhaled my chocolate donut, with chocolate pudding. My god it was so good. After the Portobello market we continued on. Throughout the day we would stop anywhere that we wanted. We also went to Camden Market, which was a definite high light of the day. That place was so cool. It was like a punk market, and so many cool things were available. We got food from this really nice lady running a Chinese food stand. 3 pounds for a ton of noodles and all this other stuff. She holds a dear place in my heart for that. Eventually we were Downtown and saw all the beautiful Christmas decorations on the buildings and streets. We went to Picadilly, where I thought I lost Alma (I continually got distracted by everything around me and would stop to look, while they walked on) and I’m sure I looked like the lost 5 year old in the crowd, creased forhead, downturned mouth, squinted eyes. Turns out Alma was right next to me and saw my whole shift in demeanor. She was cracking up. See the thing about London is you hear how big it is. How something like 8 million people live in the city. And you know all this but it doesn’t really connect until you are there. I’ve never been constantly surrounded by so many people in my life. They were all nice! But everywhere you went there were just swarms of people. I had never experienced anything like it.
Last on our list was Hyde Park. We made our way over there and I filled up my water bottle at this drinking fountain and then had the sudden realization that it was the exact same fountain from a picture of me drinking when I was last in London in 2012. It was a weird overlapping of my life. But I got a similar photo. I’ll post it. Anyway, we walk through Hyde Park and it was dark, but since it was cloudy all the lights from the city were reflecting and it was actually pretty light out. It was really weird because it didn’t look like any type of light you would see during the day…but it wasn’t dark. It was dream state surreal. Eventually we ended up at the Christmas Market in Hyde Park, which was amazing. I was blown away at how large it was. We got candy and chips there, but also just looked around at all the stands. By this point our feet are casually killing us. After the Christmas Market we go to Buckingham Palace. It’s about 10:30 and it’s basically deserted. It was so calm. We sat on the ledge of the fountain and just relaxed and ate cookies for a few moments. I really enjoyed this part because it was the first time all day that there weren’t people coming at me that I had to dodge. I could really see myself coming there to journal late at night. There was still traffic, but it was more ambient. While I don’t think I would live in London, if I did I would definitely find spots where I could have quiet moments like that. IT was really the perfect end to the day. Eventually we walked back to the station, caught the train, and then the bus back to Alma’s campus. We said goodnight to Christy and after we both showered we had tea and talked about the day and other things. It was really good to talk to Alma. We are on the same page about a lot of things, so much so that sometimes words aren’t even necessary. So many things happened in London that I saw and then would glance at Alma and we would share an understanding. Most of them were hilarious, like those people passionately kissing on the up escalator and we had to awkwardly pass them as we were going down. But yeah. Somehow we also got sucked into watching like 45 minutes worth of One Direction music videos, none of which I actually understood? But that was great fun. I didn’t fall asleep until like 3am.
Sunday Nov 23
The next morning we woke up and had breakfast and left for King’s Cross early so I could get my picture at 9 and ¾. Unfortunately, that was so crowded that I wasn’t able to, but no matter. We looked in the Harry Potter shop next door, as well as the bookshop, until it was time to get to my train. I said my goodbyes to Alma (I’ll be seeing her in about a month, so no worries :D) and was on my way.
I really enjoyed taking the train. I was able to read for class and work on some art. I sat across from an older man and we chatted as well. He told me about the good music venues in Glasgow, which I will check out after my finals.
But yes! Very good two weekends. I leave this Saturday for a week long trip to Barcelona, Berlin, and Dublin and then I come back and have to start studying for finals. My time here is wrapping up…but I’m packing as much as I can in to this last month!
Love,
Sam
Oh my god!!! I laughed like a maniac from start to finish while casually tearing up.
I almost forgot about the donuts!!!!!
Oh my god I just told all my friends about the donuts Bahahahahaha cracking up.

My flat just had "Thanksmas" meaning the Americans provided the American Thanksgiving food (sweetpotatoes/marshmellows & pumpkin bread) and we were treated to typical UK Christmas food. Like honestly it was all so delicious, but the food could have been absolute crap because we all just laughed and ate and were freaking merry. It was amazing and the perfect way to start my week. And yes I should have done some Latin tonight but there is always tomorrow. I'm so happy. I really love them.
I'll put pictures up soon, and of my trip to London.
AMSTERDAM.

November 7
So this weekend I made my way over to the Netherlands, which was an experience to say the least. Due to a confusion when I booked my flights I had to catch my plane at 5:50AM. So basically come Friday I woke up and walked down to Waverly Station at 3:20AM with a girl from my program named Merkle who happened to be making the same flight. Everything getting to Amsterdam goes off without a hitch. I fell asleep before the plane even took off and landed at Schipol Airport in one piece. However, from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal Train Station is a whole 'nother story. I made my way to the station within Schipol and promptly realized that everything was in Dutch...which I don't speak...or read. So there was some confusion there with buying tickets. I made it to the platform and realized that I wasn't going to the same station as my friends, and that I Had missed my train. So I blinked and walked off the platform. I asked a number of people where I should go before I found an attendant and she directed me to the right platform. I waited about 15 minutes there and finally caught the train. I got off at Centraal at about 10:30 in the morning and attempted to track down my hostel. Durty Nelly's said they were about 5-7 minutes from the train station. One thing I've noticed about Europe is that they aren't big on clear street signs. So I walked around for about 30 minutes before I found a free tourist map and followed that. I eventually found the hostel and dropped my stuff off, and they let me have breakfast! I also received a message from Sara Petite (a singer my dad plays with who is doing a tour in Europe) saying she could meet me at Nellys at 11:30. So I got my charger, had breakfast, and waited. Sara arived with her longtime friend named Bart and we left the hostel and out in Amsterdam! We went on a canal tour and had coffee/lunch at a place. At around 2 Sara and Bart had to leave so I said my goodbyes and started off in the city on my own. I stopped by the hostel where I took a 30 minute kip (only going on 3 hours of sleep) and then I set out again. I wandered for about 2 hours until it was time to pick Bre up from Centraal. I made my way over with a guy named Matt, who I met at the hostel. He had to pick a friend up as well. As we were waiting we chatted. However, Bre still wasn't coming out of the turnstile and I said, "Watch. I bet we are looking for each other with our backs turned." Basically what happened. I walked outside and heard Bre scream my name and we did the cliche run and squeel move, and basically caught each other up on everything with a look and 20 seconds of crazy fast talking. We said our goodbyes to Matt and I took Bre to the hostel and then we went out together! It was soooo good to see her. We got dinner at a Japanese place and then wandered around the district for a few hours and saw some sights and just chilled. We didn't stay out too late because we were both exhausted and were going to attempt to wake up early enough to get into the Anne Frank House.
Saturday November 8
Bre and I woke up at 7:30AM and had breakfast in the hostel before walking over to the Anne Frank House to get in line. we were the first group in so that was effective. The musuem was emotional. The part that hit me hardest was the lines drawn on the wall to document Anne and her sister Margot's growth over the years they were hiding. That's what drove it home for me. Seeing those dozen little lines with numbers inscribed in them. There's still marks in my house from when COle and I were young and growing. After the Anne Frank House, Bre and I walked to the Flower Market. Which was beautiful, but mainly bulbs because it was winter. I can imagine it would be a sight to behold in the Spring. After the Flower Market we walked to the Van Gogh Museum, which thankfully I bought our tickets ahead of time. We arrived early so we spent some time doing the touristy Amsterdam letter photos, and looking at the stalls. We also split a "strootwafel" which is basically the definition of heaven on earth. It was perfection. We then went into the Van Gogh Museum where I proceeded to tear up multiple times. The museum was so well done in the way that it wasn't just his paintings. There were so many facts about Van Gogh's life and his journal entries and there was a whole section on his letters to his brother, Theo. I had no idea Vincent was so close with his brother. His brother supported him with a monthly allowance for 10 years. One thing that made me really emotional was Van Gogh's famous work "Almond Blossoms"was for Theo's son, who they named Vincent. The blossoms on the branches signify new life. Theo hung it over his mantle. The one constant in Van Gogh's life was his brother, and seeing that picture really brought it all together for me. Also, I discovered what I feel is one of my favorite pieces "Wheatfield with Crows". I stared at that one a long time. But I left the Van Gogh museum with a number of postcards/prints, and a "Wheatfield with Crows" mug and a feeling of being really empty and really fulfilled at the same time. If anything I want to go back to that Museum, or see more of Van Gogh's work in other museums.
After the Van Gogh Museum Bre and I did a typical tourist move and got matching beanies for 5Euro. No regrets. They are amazing. Don't worry, it wasn't the beanies with the ear flaps that have AMSTERDAM all across the front. We were better than that. They were just colorful beanies with a pompom on the top. After that we walked to the Albert Cuyp market. Bre got a feta olive mix and a ball of mozarella from a stand and it was hands down the best mozarella I've ever had in my life. After spending time there we walked to a coffee shop to have a break. That was at about 4...and we had been on our feet/walking since 7:30am. We left the coffeeshop to regroup and take a break at the hostel before venturing out for dinner and the rest of the night.
When we did go out for the night we ate dinner at this place called Pasta Pasta which was inexepensive and fantastic. It reminded me of the sort of place you might find in Portland. After that Bre and I chilled around the city and explored different cafes. We also got more waffles. So worth it. We both agreed to go back to the hostel and had a beer while watching people dance. (That one old awkward lady). Then we went upstairs and chatted and got ready for bed.
Sunday, November 9
My alarm went off at 6:15AM and I packed up and said my goodbyes to Bre and left the hostel. Walking down the narrow streets with alleyways at 6:45AM was the most uncomfortable I've felt in my whole time in Europe, and definitely in Amsterdam, but I had no other option. I made it to the train station and realized that I didn't have enough change for the ticket. I was 30 cents short. Luckily a woman gave me a Euro and I was able to purchase my ticket. I tracked down my train and was on it, heading back to Schipol. Let me tell you, the train at 7:15 in the morning from Amsterdam to the airport on a Sunday is rough. Basically every single person still looked like they were under the influence of something. Made it to the airport in plenty of time, went through passport checks, security, and boarded my flight. I fell asleep before the plane took off, but managed to jolt awake to get my breakfast waffle. Woo!
While I had a blast in Amsterdam, I was glad I was only there for a weekend. At night time everything about that city is excessive. Anything they could amplify to the 10th degree they did. It was also amazing to look out the bus window and see Edinburgh. I really felt like I was coming home and not just returning to a place that I've been staying. The country side coming in to the city centre is beautiful and I just felt really at peace. More pictures are on my Facebook!
IFSA-Butler just contacted me through Instagram asking if I could send them photos that they could use for promotional purposes. Wat.
