ETHN 2 Circulations of Difference Classroom

Teaching Assistant: Yessica Garcia Hernandez, doctoral student of Ethnic Studies at UCSD. Welcome to our digital class archive! Students participating in this blog are taking ETHN 2: Circulations of Difference at UCSD with Professor Wayne Yang. This class is a part of a year-long introduction to the Ethnic Studies major, this course examines how racial formation in the US has been shaped by inter-regional and transnational migration and the circulation of commodities, knowledge, bodies, and culture. Course readings and class discussions will foreground an analysis of how the social construction of racial, gender, and sexual difference has both shaped and been shaped by historical and contemporary processes of movement, displacement, and containment.

Women Who Rock 'Zine #1 (Feb 2013)

Women Who Rock ‘Zine #1 is based on material created for, during, and inspired by the Women Who Rock Conference, which highlights both contemporary and past movements in and outside of Seattle by bringing together musicians, activists, writers, advocates, and scholars to talk about questions of female representation and access for women with music scenes.

This is a picture of a gold coin my grandmother had given my parents after I was born. It symbolized her presence and blessings when my parents came from India to America and were placed into an unknown environment.

My sister and I watched Young the Giant perform during a Jimmy Kimmel Live! taping around August, as they were promoting their new album. During the concert, I noticed that there was a sash tied around the mic, titled, “immigrant.” I then knew that the band’s focus of their album and beliefs was the importance of immigration and how that changed their lives in America. This is a significant concept because this was during the presidential election in which many disagreed on Donald Trump’s racists comments on minorities. Thus, this performance and their entire album defines as a sense of protest and making their voice heard through music. The band’s social conditions play a prominent role between their education and employment because their vocalist dropped out of school to continue his own passion, rather than the passion of his parents. Although being in the music industry takes a risky chance, the band proved to many others that one can only succeed with their own decisions and passion.
