Summary:

Aaron’s starting to get a little frustrated, for lack of a better word.

He and Spencer have been dating for going on three weeks now, and it’s not getting any easier.

He thought that the lump in his throat would fade away once he settled into Spencer’s gentle hands and plush lips, thought that every trace of guilt and anxiety that he’s doing something wrong would slip off his shoulders, replaced by long elegant fingers massaging out the knots in his muscles.

He thought he’d get better, and yet here he is three weeks in, sitting on the couch with shaking hands as he counts out his breaths all because he dared to kiss his boyfriend. It’s humiliating.

There are too many things working against him at once.

Bits from my extensive HotchReid headcanon collection

- Aaron really likes hard core sci fi when he has time for it. He and Spencer spend a lot of Saturdays binging Star Trek box sets. Aaron loves Next Gen best but Spencer loves the campiness of The Original Series.

-Spencer usually starts the night cuddled in with his head on Aaron’s shoulder but usually wakes up the next morning as the little spoon.

- Jack loves Spencer and they have shared interests in dinosaurs, how engines work and bugs. When Jack gets older he starts to really enjoy ‘nerdy’ things too.

- Spencer is not the inexperienced virgin that the team think he is. He had relationships all the way through his degrees and up until he started dating Hotch, he’s just more private about it than the others.

- Spencer instigated their relationship because he knew Hotch would never make the first move due to their work situation.

- Penelope was the first person that Spencer told about seeing Aaron. They were having a friend date and Spencer was being vague about the guy he was seeing so she realised she must know the other guy too. She started listing people from the office and when she said Hotch’s name, Spencer went bright red and she just knew.

- They had their first date seeing a show at the Kennedy centre. Aaron was going to drive Spencer home but Spencer used all his courage to kiss him and they ended up spending the night at Aaron’s.

- Aaron has a thing for Spencer’s legs.

- They have an ongoing joke that Spencer has an old man kink but he always insists that it’s just an Aaron kink.

- Spencer gets very into Jack’s soccer team and starts coming to practice as much as possible. He becomes friends with the moms and dads who always refer to him as Jack’s Step Dad which always makes him smile like an idiot

- Spencer loves taking Henry and Jack on day trips when he can but he’s always exhausted by the end of it and needs an early night and a huge glass of wine

Vday hotchreid drabble

Thinking about Spencer’s first valentines without Diana.

Feeling lost bc he’d always visit her nursing home to read vday poems with her like he’s done since he was little, deciding to fill that time with Aaron and Jack bc they’re the only things that make him feel better.

Then, when he’s sitting on the couch waiting for Aaron to finish making dinner, Jack comes into the livingroom holding a book.

Spencer recognizes it immediately; its the poetry book he and Diana would read.

Jack asks about it, and Spencer tells him it belonged to his Mom. Jack hesitates, unsure if he should press because he knows how much Spence has been missing her. But he knows his Papa, and he has a suspicion it might help, so he asks Spencer to read some to him, and Spencer, tears in his eyes, sits and reads valentines poems to his son.

Jack is older now than Spencer was when this tradition started, but then, Spencer’s older than Diana was back then, too.

So he gets to pass on his tradition, reading and explaining these poems as Jack listens with rapt attention. Unbeknownst to them, Aaron listens in with a smile from the kitchen.

Later, when Jack’s gone to his room and Aaron and Spencer are enjoying a romantic end to their valentines, Spencer says,

“You told him to do that, didnt you?”

Aaron smiles, pressing a kiss to Spencer’s forehead as he refills his wine glass.

“He found the book on his own,” he says, “I just told him to ask you about it.”

Spencer smiles, fighting back tears as his lover settles in beside him.

“Thank you,” he says, his voice hardly loudwr than a whisper.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Spencer,” Aaron says, because Spencer doesn’t need to thank him.

Spencer smiles and huddles in close.

“Happy Valentine’s.”

my problem really deeply is how shallow a tolerance younger people have for old queer media. like yes, it's dated and some of the politics don't hold water anymore, but to ignore older media simply based on that is to loose EVERYTHING we have bc we don't have a lot. just because queer themes caught up more recently doesn't mean we should rehash everything to fit into a more "presentable" format that is only considered modern bc of the puritanical blacklash of the last several years and sanitization of queer themes.
