Page one: Fig is strumming her bass guitar on a couch. Ayda approaches her from behind.

Page two: Ayda leans over the back of the couch to catch Fig's eye. "I think Adaine is very grateful that we rescued her," she says. Fig gives Ayda her full attention. "Yeah."

Page three: Ayda pauses. "Uh. You fight very bravely, and-" Fig puts her bass guitar to the side. "Thank you! This was not my best work today." "Um…" Ayda climbs over the couch to sit next to Fig.

Page four: Ayda blurts out, "You are extremely loud and funny and charming and you talk loudly, and that's so exciting." Flattered, Fig says, "Thank you so much! I mean, I mean, you're really direct and analytical, and you kind of deconstruct things before my eyes and make me see them in a different way. And I really like that."

Page five: Fig says, "A lot of things I take for granted, you really think through." Ayda is crying tears of flame. Fig leans in and says, "Also you cry fire, which is awesome."

Page six: Fig continues, "And check it out!" She wipes away Ayda's tears, steam sizzling from the contact. Ayda smiles and says, "Ha, that's something we have in common." Fig smiles back, "Yeah!" "That's bonding," Ayda says, and Fig confirms. "That's bonding."

what the fun part is for me in all of of this. is the fairly explicit confirmation that yes he is this hung up on her and what they had as two people who had nothing but each other all these years later. and he can have friends and a found family and a partner that he loves and he can orbit around her nuclear family all he likes but a real part of him will always miss when they knew so little about each other but he could also call her his life partner without it feeling complicated or comparatively selfish. and like we knew this but its nice to get the confirmation that liam remembers this too. unfortunately he will be going to hell for what he did

i doubt liam rolled for it in the moment bc there was so much else going on, but can you imagine if that was the last time caleb ever got to cast wish? assuming the wish wasn't replicating an already existing dunamantic spell, he's got a one in three chance of losing access to one of the most powerful spells in existence, and he blows it on torturing his best friend in the world bc he went and got himself possessed. like, just imagine--

sam: my character lost the ability to cast wish, but it was worth it because liam's character was able to see his sister at her wedding. liam, what did your character wish for?

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?
