Well, it went rapidly from "pretty sexist" to "extremely sexist, to a degree where I am actually unsure if I should finish the book or not". Is this what so many people on here were raving about? Really??

#the concepts could have been interesting but he develops them without challenging some underlying ideas at all. which is annoying #also the style is painfully passé. this is not just a Bataille thing – it is a characteristic of many French essays of the same period #yet it bugs me to an extreme

4. Did you discover any new author that you love this year?

I did! Last month I read "La gnòsi delle fanfole" by Fosco Maraini, a short book of nonsense poems. It was a lovely read, and also a compelling linguistics experiment on the way our brain can give a meaning to words that do not actually exist — as someone who works with languages, it has given me food for thought for weeks. I didn't know much about the author and am currently learning more about him, as his life was so full of events it could make a novel on its own.

11. What was your favourite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?

It was definitely "Childhood" by Tove Ditlevsen. It was published in 1967 and was first translated into Italian three years ago. I saw it in the library as soon as it came out, but only managed to read it this year. It is a stunning memoir about the author's early life and her deep-set feeling of alienation from other people. I am looking forward to reading her two other memoirs.
