Miss Fisher Con 2018 Afterthoughts

It’s hard to believe that Miss Fisher Con 2018 was a month ago (Jun 28 – 30, 2018, Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.). Since I am not good at live blogging, an afterthought post to reminisce seems appropriate. Like many of you, I was looking forward to the con all year long, and then it was over in a blink of an eye. The only consolation is that the committee has already started planning the event for next year. Bless you all lovely ladies!
Speaking of the committee, major kudos to them. First of all, the combination of last year’s success and their continuously tireless marketing effort increased the number of attendees almost three folds! (160+ registered this year from 7 countries) The venue, Embassy Suites Portland-Downtown, was perfectly located with easy access to various local attractions, and the building’s beautiful motif created the retro atmosphere that matched the theme of the event. Also, the topics of sessions were well thought out with fantastic speakers who were knowledgeable and engaging. Last but not least, there were several venders set up on site that provided convenient shopping experiences for vintage clothing and accessories. What’s more, the con supplied beautifully designed tote bags at registration to make it easy for us to carry the purchases and other stuff. They really thought of everything!
Since the con was to celebrate MFMM, what could be more exciting than having someone from the show to join us? This year we were treated with a pre-recorded video interview with the producers Fiona Eagger and Deb Cox, who talked about the show and the movie (no spoilers, though). The committee also invited Ruby Rees (aka Jane Ross) as our VIP for 3 whole days! Like Travis and Anthony last year, Ruby did the Miss Fisher Philes podcast interview, signed autographs, and posted for photos with everyone. She also attended most of the sessions, including serving as the judge for the masquerade, and seemed to quite enjoy herself. It was such a treat to finally meet this lovely, adorable, fun, and multitalented young lady. I was lucky enough to catch her for a few minutes to discuss her new show “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (on Amazon Prime now) and told her that I looked forward to her new film “Women by the Sea”, which she wrote and will star.
On a personal note, Mr. Foxy attended the con with me this year and had the opportunity to hang out with those who he heard me mention almost daily. He is a fan of the show too and has watched each episode multiple times with me, so he was able to get the references during the sessions and discussions. Although he thoroughly enjoyed the event itself, our flights to and from Portland were some of the worst we had ever experienced due to delays and connections. Wherever next year’s con is to be held, we hope there will be direct flights. Fingers crossed.
