There's a coffee shop near me that has two signs posted on the door.

And I'm just like, damn, I wonder if "you can be a servant but never a customer" is a well-known hallmark of systematic discrimination or anything. Like come on. How do you not see this

been thinking a lot about the societal role and media portrayal of "The WAG" as i read heated rivalry fic and not to be that woke friend but there's something so sinister about it all

i mean the way "the WAGs" sit in the background of so many works, and exist solely in service to all the male main characters is a bit uncomfortable to me. they are universally kind and bubbly and hyper-woke and above all else, so excited to help/cater to not just their husbands but all of their husband's coworkers. their labor often becomes just an expected perk to their husband's friends—often the mark of two male characters becoming "real friends" is one's WAG doing something for the other. shane and hayden become close, ergo jackie stocks the house with his favorite drink and prepares food for his incredibly contrived diet

there's never any sense that they resent all that's expected from them. the ottowa WAG's, even if they have no relationship with shane and ilya at all yet, have endless time to deal with their hijinks and help their plans. jackie sometimes only speaks to shane to serve him food and counsel him on his tragic gay love affair with the grounding presence and endless knowledge of a woman born with a gender studies degree. there's a trope i've seen a couple times, where either shane or ilya gets injured/sick, and immediately an endless rotation of nameless WAGs are making their meals for them.

i know all the unappreciated labor and glorification of the role is very realistic to the way WAGs function in real life, so i'm not upset that it has a strong presence in the game changers universe and fanworks. i just get a sense sometimes that it's role in a fic is going for a portrayal of "the village" a la "the WAGs feed ilya ergo the Bears are the best team ever and their community is so loving and tight knit", which chafes at me a bit.

this is also why i feel a little weird sometimes about the idea of WAG-hood being attractive to shane or ilya. of course, in the abstract, it's a role that publicly defines you by your relationship, which must appeal to two people forced to hide that part of themselves for a decade. but in practice, it's fundamentally a service role for people the world thinks of as frivolous side characters.

idk i don't mean to be too harsh here. a lot of these fics are sweet and fun and make me miss my girls. just like- manifesting to the universe that i'm also going to come across fics where jackie has chronic foot in her mouth disease about shane being gay because her only exposure to queerness comes from like GBFs in movies and corny "love is love" posters. or resents the hell out of him because not only has she spent years making his weird special food whenever hayden decides to impromptu bring him for dinner, but now he isn't even dating a proper WAG who will help her plan the team barbecue.

If being in the Yuzu fandom teached me one thing it will only get worse and these ppl are not real fans as much as they claim to be. I have very bad flashbacks...I am so sorry...yet not surprised fans in a sport like skating go that far bc we have been there already...sigh
