The second the question left Katie’s mouth, she wished she could take it back. It was one rule she’d always tried to strictly follow with Chris - to never ask about the future. She had long ago accepted, even when they were friends, that that simply wasn’t how Chris worked.Â
She nodded her head enthusiastically as he talked, as if trying to make up for ever asking the question. “Of course, of course…I don’t expect you to…” Still, she could help the way her lip quivered as he delivered the blow that no, he probably wouldn’t ever want more kids.Â
The funny thing was, she could distinctly recall a time where she thought someday, her, Chris, and Lukas would be a family and that would be all they could ever be. And that idea never bothered her. But now - ever since Jude was born - it kind of hurt her, if she was being honest. It was hard for her to know that Bella was going to have something she probably never would. She knew that was selfish, and it wasn’t as if she hated Jude - but she hated that Bella was the one that got to have Chris’ kid, and not her.Â
She shook her head. “I understand. I do - I…I swear I do, okay?” She couldn’t ever try to tell him how jealous she was of Bella, how it hurt her every day to think of the fact that she had Chris’ child when Katie never would…but then again, Katie probably never could, either. “I only just asked because…well, I guess - I just wanted to think that if it had happened, you’d have been happy about it. Because I would’ve, you know? I know we didn’t plan it and it’s the worst possible time…but I would’ve been happy, and I would’ve wanted you to be happy with me.”
She breathed heavily, wiping her eyes. “It’s not that I’m not happy, how it is. Luke is…more than I could have dreamed of, and you and us are just the greatest thing I’ve ever had…but I…” a tear slipped down her cheek, and she covered her face. “God, I’m sorry, Chris. I’m sorry. I guess it just got me thinking about…about what happened, with Jake, y’know? And how - well, it doesn’t even matter, really. Because even if I was, it probably wouldn’t have worked…and I guess that’s what…that’s what scares me. And it makes me angry. God, it makes me so angry, Chris. Because it’s one thing to go on with life, deciding not to have children with you and be our own little family in however we got here, but…to think that if accidents happen, and we ever did…I don’t know if that baby would survive, you know? And it’s his fault and that makes me angry and it scares me and there’s a little part of me that wants to know…but it doesn’t even matter, because I’m choosing it. But…fuck, I’m not making any sense, am I?”
