Do you have any recommended courses or online videos for learning tapestry weaving? I myself am particularly interested in ones that have a lot of different colours and shading and such, how to do that. Thank you for any help! I love your work

The only classes I've taken have been Rebecca Mezoff's classes. https://rebeccamezoff.com/online-learning She's great, I would definitely check her out if you are interested. She has a variety of classes, some for beginners and others for more experienced weavers.

I recently bought Warp and Weft and mean to start it this year, once I get through a little project I'm working on. Warp and Weft is her in-depth tapestry basics course. I think I have the basics down already hah but want to do a course like that since I was mostly self taught at first and I want to sort of go backwards and get a proper foundation.

If her courses are out of your price range, she's got tons of videos on her Youtube as well.

Hi :) I think I have most of my posts about it tagged as 'tapestry diary' but I may have forgotten to tag some. If you search my blog for 'diary' they should show up. Or just scroll through my blog since I haven't posted a ton of posts overall haha.

Tommye Scanlin is the weaver I saw doing tapestry diaries and is why I started mine. She has a book called Marking Time which is about her diaries and other textile/fiber artist's daily practices. She also has posts on her blog about her diaries too. She's been doing them for 17 years!!!

It's been really good for me. I've always resisted a daily practice in any art form I've done. This is the first one to stick. I only missed one day. I made sure to give myself easy days - every fifth day is a simple stripe instead of the square with the design. And any time I was rushed I just did a simple gradient or something instead of imagery. Which is fine because it's still practice and that's the point of it. Ideally I wanted to record something about my day but sometimes I don't have time/energy to think about it.

I've been thinking about doing a letter each day for the next year. But I'm afraid that'll be really difficult...

I'm trying to decide how I'm going to finish my tapestry diary. It's about 5.5 feet long now and it'll have the final chunk as well. So a little over 6 feet long. I don't know how I'll connect the pieces, especially if I want to hang it. I didn't weave headers so I can't easily sew them together. They're each different lengths too so I think they'd look funny hung next to each other. I didn't think about this part when I started. hmmm

At least I have almost all of the ends sewn in!! :)

I took and enjoyed a workshop with tapestry weaver Robbie LaFleur this weekend on transparent tapestry techniques in the style of Norwegian weaver Frida Hansen. Workshops are such a fun way to be around other weavers. Transparent tapestry means weaving shapes on an open warp, as opposed to weaving edge to edge with a discontinuous weft. Here I’ve woven a snail and left gaps on the warp to emphasize the spiral of his little shell. I wasn’t able to finish my tapestry before the end of the workshop but I’ll finish him at home and reblog the final pictures.

I just realized why it feels kinda weird when I change the shed on my oldest mirrix loom. I’ve worn down the holes where the handle goes ! The hole with the handle is about twice as big as it should be. The hole on the other side is somewhat larger too. How funny. It never occurred to me until tonight to compare the holes to another one. I happen to have two side by side right now on my table. I usually don’t have space to do that.

I have had this one a long time now. Guess I’ll have to replace the shedding device. The rubber on the handle is worn down too.

I wove the exact same cartoon with two different setts and yarn weights to teach myself a lesson. On the left side: 6 epi, worsted weight weft, on the right side: 11 epi, lace weight weft bundled into groups of two. Exact same cartoon, exact same loom, exact same warp. I think the wider sett looks so rough that I’m really *practicjng vulnerability* here by sharing it but I wanted to show you all how big of a difference these choices can make in the outcome. As a full confession I didn’t do this on purpose I just thought it would look cute chunky and it SUPER DIDN’T so I immediately rewarped the loom and tried again lmfao

Anyway here’s Keke the Forest Spirit, inspired by a real cat named Keke whose guardian is beading me a bolo tie in exchange for this tapestry.

My treacherous eye, finished by me in 2026. Warp is cotton seine twine, weft is wool. Measures 23” x 21.5”.

This is woven from a reference photo of my right eye, which is, for both complicated and very straightforward reasons (eye don’t work good), frequently hidden under an eyepatch. I wove a large tapestry hoping that the time taken to hand weave it would be time I could use to digest the reality of my eye (eye don’t work good). I do not think that worked—but I did start to enjoy the grossness of it a bit as I wove the inside lid.

I’m going to enter this in some calls for art if I find the right one, maybe I will get to show it off in person someday.

My treacherous eye continues on apace!! Getting into the color now and finished the gross bits (my favorite bits). This is at the point where every weaving session is a pitched battle between me and the fell line, but I’m working it out.
