Theory: Akashi Seijuurou’s Eyes
… were never heterochromatic.
Akashi Seijuurou has always had two red eyes. There was never a change.
Now, I bet you’re asking, “Well, what supports your theory?”
Clearly he’s shown with a red eye and a different colored eye. It’s plain as day. What gives?
In KnB, we’re given a lot of imaginary examples of things. Like Hayama’s dribbles becoming lightning, the sparks flying from the eyes of the players that go into the Zone, the door to the Zone itself. These are all imaginary representations of what’s going on. To anyone else within that world itself watching, it doesn’t seem quite as intense as the things that we on the outside get to see.
This is what Akashi’s other eye is when he switches personalities. It’s an imaginary visual set up so that we can easily distinguish which Akashi is which. Full red eyes? Original Akashi. One red, one different? That’s the other Akashi.
Just for the sake of if it’s possible or not, we’re gonna get this out of the way right now. There is no personality disorder that can actually change your eye color.
But this is anime. So suuuure, something like that can be allowed to happen. Why not?
Because no one ever reacts to it, that’s why not.
No one ever questions or plain seems to notice Akashi’s eyes changing color.
Even Mr. Observant himself, who is constantly looking at people’s eyes, doesn’t seem to register that particular change, even though he saw Akashi soon after it first happened, and was right there in the same game with the guy when they changed back.
The only way that he realizes that Akashi is back to his old self is by the way that he speaks to him.
Akashi’s own teammates are the same way. They see him close his heterochromatic eyes as he’s coming back to his old self, and when they open again, they’re full on red. And no one reacts. They don’t react to that whatsoever. The only thing that they’re confused about is why he’d suddenly started playing so poorly before.
And you can’t even argue that maybe they just weren’t looking at his eyes. Akashi is the team captain. So when he speaks, all eyes are going to be on him. Even if it isn’t direct eye contact, with the drastic change in what his eye color was, it would probably be easily noticeable, especially to those closer to him.
So, isn’t that strange? Something as major as someone’s eye changing colors right in front of yours would at least be worthy of some kind of thought, wouldn’t it?!
But there’s never any given to it. At all. I’ve been using images from the anime, but it’s like that in the manga too. No one ever addresses Akashi’s change in eye color. Even Midorima, who first mentions that there are two of him, doesn’t use the eye color as a factor, just the way that his personality was.
Why would no one react to this? It certainly is a quick and jarring sort of change. So, how come no one seems to notice it? Because they don’t see any change. Akashi, to them, has always had red eyes. The only distinguishing factor for the characters has been his change in mannerisms.
We’re the only ones who ever see his different colored eye. Perhaps Akashi sees it himself as well, as it’s a mark of that version of him. But other than that, it’s just us.
