This week I chose to dive into the concept of societal pressures that arise in women. I think a lot of the digital age produces media and advertisements directed at women’s beauty. This is a concept I have never understood. Companies base their marketing off women’s insecurities and play a huge role in young women’s body image issues. A quote that caught my eye was “Every Swimsuit Needs a Little Wiggle Room”. This was an advertisement for fat burners. To me this is appalling. I also chose words that were in other advertisements such as “petite and crowd pleaser” to emphasize this idea.

I love that you choose to focus on this subject. It is so important to talk about this today, and art is a great way to bring attention to it. This is such a powerful piece, and I love how you choose to execute it.

Final

For my artwork I made a background using paint on a canvas. I was inspired by the cubism unit when creating the background. I used familiar shapes like circles, squares, triangles etc and then also incorporated made up abstract shapes in all different colors.

In the next part of this artwork, I was inspired by the unit on abstract expressionism. I wanted to use a different medium so instead of paint I used a fine point marker for this step. I made abstract shapes and lines to add to the canvas. After finishing with the marker, I went back to paint and used the technique of splattering. The last material I used for this part was sticker gems to add to the abstract of the piece.

In the last part of my piece, I created a character inspired by my work from the surrealism movement. This character is similar to that of Frank from this unit. I used paint to create him and marker to add his facial features.

Final Assignment

My piece incorporates elements of cubism. It does so through the geometric shapes that make up the background. Like our cubism assignment, I tried to go beyond the basic geometric shapes and use unique and imaginative shapes.

My piece also incorporates surrealism. This is through the mermaid that is the focal point of the canvas. Mermaids are imaginative and surreal creatures that do not actually exist, which aligns with the surrealism art style.

Lastly, my piece incorporates aspects of abstract expressionism. I used abstract scribbles and line work in order to fill the rest of the background of the piece, and get rid of excess white space. I free drew the lines, and used whatever color I felt like, not necessarily following a certain color scheme or pattern, which aligns with abstract expressionism art style.

Final

The first movement I incorporated was abstract expressionism. I Used this in the background by creating various lines, whatever came to mind when I was drawing. I felt that this represented the different thoughts and feelings one can have all at once. Some line are sharp are short, while others are twisted and free.

I then incorporated surrealism by creating figures at the bottom of the canvas. These figures have flowers for heads and long extending limbs. I felt that this mimicked our homework assignment, and I enjoyed creating more surreal characters.

Lastly, I incorporated fauvism at the top of the canvas. I decided to create a sky, but used unrealistic and bright colors. I did this by creating red clouds and a green sun. I got this idea from looking at the fauvism painting that had bizarre colors for a person's skin, hair, etc.

I had a lot of fun in this class, and am happy to have been able to develop my artistic abilities!

TikTok - Make Your Day

I decided to use a technique where you apply salt to water color to form texture on top of the page. This did not work as well as I anticipated, however still created some texture.

My name is Claire and I am currently a senior psychology major. I am from Fairfield CT, and I am so excited to take this class this semester. I don't know many artistic skills, however I am hoping to grow my knowledge through this course. After graduation I am planning to attend grad school, and am excited about my future.

Self-Love

Conceptual goals: I made this piece to keep in my living room at home. This matches the theme of my living room and feel it will make a good reminder.

Course Inspiration: The Lessons from the book and art history classes have allowed me to develop the skills i used in this piece. Through the Lessons I have been able to become more comfortable expressing myself artistically, and have learned how to use different materials.

Aesthetic Goals: When starting this piece I decided to create a background that gradually shifted from different colors. I did this to represent the fluidity in my life and how there are so many different emotions I am experiencing and opportunities that are at hand. I then wanted to include the saying "you are enough". I feel that as a student it can be difficult to acknowledge the hard work you have done because you are always moving onto the next assignment or exam. It is important to take time and look at the work you have completed and realize "you are enough". I included the flowers to illustrate my growing knowledge. I am still very young, and I learn something new everyday, therefore am always growing intellectually and emotionally.

Spreading Love

Aesthetic Goal: I began this piece with circles along the outside edge, I then thought it would be interesting if they gradually became smaller to create some sort of border. I made the inside more abstract and up to interpretation. I also included these colors because they are my moms favorite colors.

Course Inspiration: I feel that the lessons that discussed incorporating nature into our art helped me with this assignment. There are so many different shapes within nature that inspired this piece such as tree branches or sticks, along with rocks.

Conceptual Goals: I created this for my Mom. My Mom loves dot art, and that's why I began with the circles on the outside. My Mom also loves more abstract art, and that is why I included the middle section with only lines. I feel that this looks aesthetically pleasing, yet can be interpreted in many different ways. My mom will enjoy coming up with her own personal interpretation.
