what we learnt about fine line from zane lowe’s interview with harry:
golden:
introduces the theme of vulnerability being the key to great friendship
the feeling of ‘I know you’re scared but I’m just going to tell you the truth and what you need to hear’
sets the album up and introduces the main themes of vulnerability and the personal vibe of the album
it was written on the second day harry and the crew were in shangri-la studios
after they had written it harry immediately knew it was going to be the opener to the album
harry used to drive between where he was staying to the studio listening to golden, it’s the perfect PHC song (pacific coast highway in malibu) so perfect for driving down the coast, feels very malibu to him
the day they wrote golden, they all sat in the kitchen just with a guitar and sang it around the table, it felt really good and more joyous
watermelon sugar:
about the ‘the joys of mutually appreciated oral pleasure’ lmao
adore you:
when harry played liam gallagher the album, WS didn’t have any horns on it, lights up, treat people with kindness and adore you all hadn’t been written at that point (march of this year) and were written in the last week or so of the album making process
cherry:
in the words of zane, it’s ‘crazy’ and ‘cutting right to it’
lots of imagery within it of losing someone to someone else but still having the remnant connection between you/those feelings still being there
he wanted to stay true to the moment he wrote the song and how he felt at that time despite the knowledge that once it would be released, speculation and people trying to decipher it would happen
‘you get petty when things don’t go well or the way you wanted them to’
it’s pathetic at times
he wrote it at 2am ish in the studio with tyler and sammy after having a conversation about the types of records he wants to be making in the future
he felt really good after finishing writing it
camille’s voice is at the end of the song, which was added in later on in the process, they’re friends and she was okay with harry using it on the album, harry thinks she liked the song
falling:
the first time zane heard falling everyone in the room was floored and it’s one of the standouts of fine line, a song he thinks will be carried beyond the context of the album
it was written in 20 minutes at the piano after harry got out of the shower when tom was picking him up from tom’s house to go to dinner
inspired by the fact that when making fine line, when he was happy they were the happiest times in his life, and when he was low, it was the lowest he’s ever been in his life
the chorus starts: “what am I now? am I someone I don’t want around?”
about when harry was asking himself ‘who am I? what am I doing here?’
imagery of being too drunk, wandering hands, guilt points in a relationship etc
about feeling like you’re falling back into one of those low moments and seeing yourself becoming someone you don’t want to be
canyon moon:
about reflecting on a time where times were simpler and good
fine line:
harry knew it would be the closer to the album as soon as he wrote it, but didn’t know it would be the title of the album until later
according to zane it’s a ‘powerful piece of music’ and a ‘stunner’ and one of his favourite songs of the year
