Tonight, I finished a book. I. Finished. A. Book. *insert ugly crying here* I'm proud and ecstatic, because there was a time when I thought I would never be able to do this again. But I'm also filled with anxiety. There's a voice inside my head telling me that this book is garbage and that it'll be bad no matter how hard I try to fix it. That voice sucks and deserves to be kicked off this mortal plane, but it can also serve as fuel. It makes me eager to take this book apart and make it better. Have you ever regretted not reading a book sooner? You're blown away by its sheer awesomeness, and you get mad at yourself for not moving it up your TBR pile. The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang is definitely one my favorite books of the year. It's Harry Potter meets Naruto meets Game of Thrones. Except the protagonist is a girl who remains badass despite being bullied for her skin color and social class. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A lot of reviews stated some major trigger warnings for this book, but when I started reading it, I was like, "That's it? This isn't so bad." IT WAS A TOTAL LIE. The first half of the book lulls you into a false sense of security. It takes place in a military school where Rin has to cope with homework and bullies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But the second half. Ohmygod. Everything was all fun and games until Mugen declared war on Nikan. Then, the real horror started. I fully understood why those trigger warnings were necessary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I highly recommend The Poppy War. It will leave you in awe, especially after you find out that certain chapters are based on historical events. BUT--and this is a major but--you have to be in the right mindset for it. Usually, short story collections are a mixed bag. I would adore some stories but feel lukewarm about the rest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That wasn't the case with Start Here: Short Stories of First Encounters at all. It's a collection of short stories with "unapologetically queer, happy endings." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I found something to love about each story and found myself squealing due to kilig several times. If you love books with villain-ish female characters, you're going to love Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Xifeng, the protagonist, is an actual villain in the making. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The book is an East Asian retelling of the Evil Queen from Snow White's origin story. The world the book is set in isn't one a modern person would want to live in, but it's so fascinating. The characters inhabit a patriarchal society where a woman's value is based on her beauty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born with almost supernatural beauty, Xifeng's face becomes her greatest strength...and weakness. She lets her ambition consume her, wielding her beauty like a razor-sharp knife. The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon made me really excited to start writing YA again. I've been suffering from writer's block for a while, but the book opened my eyes to all the possibilities I haven't explored within YA yet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some chapters were told from POVs of seemingly random characters, but it all came together wonderfully by the end. New York was also a major aspect of the book, and that got me thinking about setting. All of my books are set in Iloilo, but there are still so many things about my hometown that I haven't explored in my writing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I could go on and on. Haha.
