“Your – Hi – Ma’am – Mrs. Carlyle,” Jakes eyes flicked between Clarke and her mothers. He hadn’t been prepared for this. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Cecily Carlyle, but Mrs. Carlyle will do just fine.” With perfect poise, she offered her hand to shake his. “It’s finally nice to meet you, too,  Mr. King. I’ve heard and seen great things, sometimes.”

Clarke held her bouquet in an arm and grasped Jake’s hand with the other, smiling proudly though her heart pumped what felt like a hundred beats a second, “He surprised me, mom. Wasn’t that so sweet?”
