Hi. I'm Marley Rose aka Violin Girl. I would be upset about that, but it's actually something that I am actually pretty fine with since it's my calling and all. Otherwise, there's really not much else to know about me except that I'll hopefully be Juilliard bound in the fall. Send positive thoughts my way? It's much appreciated. Plus I need all the luck/help I can get. Anyways, if there's anything else you want to know just ask!
NOTES: Jake takes Marley to a special performance by the Oregon Symphony featuring Janine Jansen while Marley continues to question what he likes about her.
NOTES: Visitors begin to see Marley and offer their condolences and make a few requests.Â
It had to have been a new day because different nurses were tending to the tubes, bandages, and machines that seemed to be branching out of every single spot of her body. It was kind of sad and pathetic that the changing nursing shifts were how she judged the time passing. It wasnât the most sad thing about the whole situation, but Marley didnât want to even think about the most sad and depressing part of it all. It would hurt too much and the more she even thought about it, the more she thought about just letting go and she had that choice. It was a big one and a terrifying one. How was she supposed to decide whether or not to stay? Marley wasnât sure that she wanted to leave but what did she have keeping her here in a world without her family? Was there even anything that could get her to stay?
She could hear the mumbled conversations of the nurses and doctors as they filtered into her room. She was stable- Marley was just unable to tell whether that was good or bad. She was still in a coma and until she decided whether to stay or go, they wouldnât know the full extent of her injuries, but for now she was here and she was stable. Apparently that was something she should be thankful for, and the people around her had the audacity to say just as much. She would be thankful if her parents and little brother were here. She would be thankful if they had never gotten in the accident to begin with. Instead, she had to be thankful that she was here and that her injuries werenât worse. It was crap and it pissed her off. They didnât know anything.
At least she was doing well enough to see visitors, even if it was just family for now. Marley was grateful for that, she was, but there was one person that she wanted to see more than anything- Jake. She knew he was here now. After all, she had heard him barreling in before the nurses stopped him. Despite the fact that she knew she couldnât be heard, Marley begged and pleaded for them to just let him in. However, he was stuck in the waiting room with everyone else that was there for her- her grandparents, Tina, her parentsâ friends, his friends. Sure, it was reassuring seeing them all there for her, but they werenât Teddy. They werenât her crazy, embarrassing parents. They werenât really her family. And thatâs what she needed now to get her through this, her family.
Her head popped up when she heard someone enter the room. She could practically feel herself hoping that it was Jake or Tina even though Marley knew it couldnât be. Marley did however give a small smile when she saw her grandparents enter the room. Her gran took the chair next to her bed while her stoic gramps stood in the corner. Marley watched as her grandmother took her hand and began talking. She rambled on and on about anything and everything, except the loss of her family. She got all caught up on her granâs gardening, her prize-winning orchids, and all of the familyâs drama. It was one of the things that she loved about her gran- she was very no-nonsense but more than anything, she was trying to act like nothing had happened. Like Marley wasnât sitting in a hospital bed with tubes and machines breathing and living for her. And she appreciated it more than her gran would ever know. Maybe one day she have the chance to tell her that or maybe she would just know.
â...And Tina and Jake are here too. They wanted to make sure that you knew that. Even though they arenât here physically right now, they are here. Donât forget that hun. Weâll get them in here for you. Promise.â Her gran finished before a doctor was beckoning her out of the room to fill her in on Marleyâs condition. Marley watched as her gran planted a kiss on her forehead before hesitantly following the doctor out of her room and into the hallway.
Thatâs when her gramps stepped in cautiously, taking the seat that her gran once had. She could tell that he looked terrible, like he hadnât slept in days and maybe even like he had been crying. It was a strange, yet completely heartbreaking sight. Marley had never seen her grandfather upset or cry or anything really. It wasnât that he was emotionless, he was just a very stoic man. The only time that he really opened up to her was when he took her to her Juilliard audition in San Diego. Even then he didnât say much, but he complimented her playing and had said he was proud of her. Honestly, that was all that she needed to hear and made all the stress and nervousness of the audition worth it. And now, he had that same look on his face as he did back then, like he was about to say something profound. As her gramps reached over and grabbed her hand, Marley leaned in closer and clung to every single word he said.
âI uh, I donât know how else to say this Marley,â he started, the emotion present through the cracking in his voice. âI know that everyone wants you to stay here with us, with your family. I want that too. I want that more than anything else in this world and I know that you can do it. That youâre strong enough to stay and make it through all this. But I understand if you donât want to. I understand that you might not want to stay her and that it might be really hard to fight through all of this and that you might not want to fight. I understand that Marley. Thatâs why Iâm telling you that itâs okay if you donât want to stay, if you want to stop fighting. Itâs okay for you to leave us here. Itâll be hard but we understand. Itâs okay for you to let go.â
Marley could feel the tears in her eyes as she listened to him speak and she began to cry harder when she realized that he was crying too. She couldnât even begin to describe the weight that was lifted off her shoulders and the relief that washed over her in its place. She finally felt like someone understood and even though she didnât need his permission (or anyoneâs really) it made her feel better because it showed her that they understood. It showed her that they would eventually be okay with her decision. âThank you Gramps. I love you.â Marley whispered as she wiped the tears from her eyes. If they would be understand and be okay with her decision then Marley would be too. Her mind was made up. She knew what she had to do.
NOTES: Marley finds out that she is now on her own and begins to contemplate on whether or not she should stay.
TRIGGERS: mentions of death
Marley wasnât sure what time it was. Her room didnât have any windows so she really had no way to judge the passing of time. All she knew was that it had to have been hours and hours since she first arrived because âsheâ had returned back to her ICU room after surgery. Judging by the mumbled conversations of the nurses, it was a pretty intensive surgery. Ruptured spleen. Fractured leg. Punctured lung. Brain contusions. Apparently it was really, really bad and she was lucky to be alive despite the fact that she was in a coma and attached to a ventilator. And the fact that she was an orphan. Her and Teddy were orphans. Actually, she was an orphan. That was another thing to get used to. It was just her now. Marley woke up this morning as a daughter and a sister and now she just was.
It was one of those things that Marley always had nightmares about but never imagined that it would happen to her. Marley knew that her mother didnât make it- the impact alone from the accident had killed her, but her father? The last she heard, he was headed into surgery. And her dad was a fighter so that meant that he would fight to stay with her and Teddy. Apparently he had already done all the fighting that he could do because while she was in surgery, he never made it out of his. Or maybe he sensed that something happened to Teddy and decided to stop fighting. And just like that, Marley was alone. Even Teddy had left her, but she had no control in that, no one did. The brain bleed took him. It was so sudden and unexpected and there was nothing they could do. That was something that she was hearing a lot of lately. Teddy was just a little boy; a little boy who would never learn to drive or graduate high school or fall in love. He would never get to grow up and live the life he was supposed to have. It just wasnât fair, then again, none of this was.
Marley simply leaned against the bare wall as she stared ahead of her at well, herself. When you looked past the cuts and scrapes all over her face, she could still tell it was her which she took as a good thing. It was when you looked past that where things looked terrible for her. It seemed as if every inch of her body was covered in tubing and wires as if they were living for her and in many ways they were. They were all keeping her alive. Her and the nurses. It was like clockwork. They would come in every hour to check her machines, give her medication, keep her alive. If she was lucky, some of the nurses would even talk to her as if it was helping her as much the medication that was pumping through her fragile body.
It was the end of her shift and she was doing her final checks for the night. The compassion made Marley smile as she gathered her belongings and made sure that her body was taken care of. âAlright missy,â the nurse spoke softly as she stroked her messy hair. âTomorrow I want to see those beautiful eyes of yours and I want to see you get better. I figured you needed a little push with everything thatâs happened. Itâs all up to you, whether you stay or go, but weâre rooting for you. Goodnight Marley.â With that, the nurse left. The nurse had a point. Marley guessed that it was up to her, but how could she make that decision? Whether to stay or to go. Marley couldnât even imagine living in a would without her crazy parents or annoying brother but it was also hard to imagine leaving her grandparents, Tina, and Jake. What was she supposed to do? With a sigh, Marley wandered over to the glass entry of the ICU and looked out at all the people waiting for her- her grandparents, Willow and more of her parentsâ friends, and Tina. A friendly face that belonged to her. How was she supposed to leave them? Could she leave them? Marley didnât know. Yet the only other person that she couldnât imagine leaving was nowhere to be found. Maybe that was a sign. If he wasnât here maybe that meant she shouldnât be either. What other reason did she have to stay?
NOTES: Marley recalls the events of her family arriving at the hospital after their accident through an out of body experience.
TRIGGERS: mentions of death
âWhere am I?â
It was her first thought when she woke up. Even as her eyes fluttered open slowly, Marley knew that she wasnât in her room in her home. Definitely not. No, she was in a hospital room that was anything but familiar. That is when it hit her, thatâs when everything hit her- Jakeâs concert, visiting her grandparents, the weather, the crash. The crash. Oh god. Marley could feel herself panicking internally even though it made sense now, her being in the hospital. Which meant that her parents and Teddy had to be here too right? Marley needed to find her family, it was as simple as that.
She sprung out of the hospital bed and rushed to the nearest nurseâs station, trying to find any type of hospital employee. Marley leaned over the counter in an attempt to get their full attention. âHello. Iâm looking for my parents and little brother- Dennis, Millie, and Teddy Rose. I need to know where they are right now!â She demanded with a shaky voice, though none of them seemed to hear her. âExcuse me!â Marley spoke a little louder as she beat on the counter repeatedly to get their attention. âI need to know about Dennis, Millie, and Teddy Rose! They were in an accident out on Route 30 outside of Portland. I was brought here and I need to know where they are and how they are doing. Please!â Marley was all but screaming at the nurses around her but no one seemed to even notice. They were too busy going about their mundane tasks- filling out charts, making phone calls to doctors, chatting with each other, and ushering traffic around the ICU. Well fine. If they were going to ignore her then Marley would just have to take matters into her own hands.
âDenny Rose. 39. Multiple lacerations and other trauma as a result of a motor vehicle.â Marleyâs head turned immediately when she heard her fatherâs name. âDad?â She wasted no time moving towards the stretcher carrying her battered father being pushed by doctors, nurses, or EMTs. âDad, Iâm here okay? I love you.â Marley said as she ran alongside the bed with the crowd. She strained to listen as the doctor continued talking. âWe suspect massive internal bleeding. Call OR 8 and have them prep for immediate surgery. Wife was DOA at the scene and his two kids are here. Come on Mr. Rose, you gotta fight for usâŠâ
In that moment, Marley was sure her heart stopped. She remained motionless in the middle of the hallway as the group rushed ahead of her and into an elevator. No. DOA couldnât mean that in this case. It just couldnât. Her mom was okay. She had to be. Marley wiped away the tears that were forming in her eyes because there was no need. Her mom was fine, her dad was going to be fine after surgery, and Teddy would be fine. Teddy. At the thought of her little brother alone, Marley took off towards the pediatric wing. She could only imagine how scared he was in this moment- being in a place like this all alone after their accident. Marley scoured the pediatric wing to find her little brother, peering into every single open window until she spotted the moppy head of blonde hair. âTeddy,â she whispered before rushing into the room and to his bedside. âHey you little stinker. Itâs Marley. Iâm here okay. Your big sister is here. Everything is alright. Everything is going to be alright. I promise.â She whispered to him with a shaky voice before leaning down to kiss his forehead. Marley was not leaving his side until this was settled. The last thing he needed to be was alone amidst all of this.
Suddenly Marley heard footsteps enter the room, only to look up and see her grandparents. âGrandma! Grandpa!â She exclaimed excitedly, thankful that someone familiar and comforting seemed to be here for them. But just as the nurses before them, they ignored Marley too. What in the world was going on? Instead, they both rushed to Teddyâs bedside as Marley took a few steps back, running her hands through her tousled hair. Satisfied with the company Teddy had, Marley took off again through the bare and hollow hallways of the hospital. She needed to find out what was going on with her, find her father, figure out where her mother was, and return to Teddy in case he woke up soon.
âDad? Dad?!â She screamed, hearing her voice echo throughout the halls, even though she knew that there was no point. No one noticed or really cared. All she wanted to do was scream and scream and scream until someone heard her. But she knew that it was useless.
It was then that she noticed all the nurses rushing into one of the ICU rooms, following the incessant beeping of different machines. âSheâs crashing! We gotta get her up to surgery! Thereâs bleeding in the abdomen and it looks like weâve got a ruptured spleen. This needs to be put under control. NOW!â Intrigued, Marley watched as the young girl on the bed was pushed in the same direction that her father and his doctors has just taken. Yet, as the stretcher passed, Marley saw a familiar face- it was her. Confusion was clearly etched all over her face. If that was her on the stretcher then who was she? What was she? Did it mean that she was dead too?
She stood in silence as she watched the doctors disappear with her around the corner and into the elevator. Marley felt a million different things, unaware which emotion was more prevalent. Needless to say she was beyond overwhelmed. This had to be a dream, there was no other explanation for it. She was nervous about her Juilliard letter and seeing Jake that her mind decided to play this cruel joke on her in the form of a nightmare. But when she closed her eyes tightly and opened them, nothing changed. No matter how many times she closed her eyes and opened them, this nightmare was still real. Wandering into the now empty room where she was apparently saying, Marley tucked herself into the far corner and sat on the floor with her knees pulled closely into her chest. It was then that Marley allowed herself to feel everything, allowing the tears to cascade freely down her cheeks. In that moment, she had never felt more alone. Where was everyone- her parentsâ friends, Tina, Jake? Where were they? Of course, when she felt like she needed someone, anyone really, she was all alone.Â
NOTES: Despite feeling extremely anxious to see Jake, her parents convince her to visit her grandparents. However, on the way home, tragedy strikes.
TRIGGERS: Car accident
Marleyâs parents were extremely lucky that she was such a good daughter. They were also lucky that guilt and bribery worked very well on her. Needless to say, she aimed to please them, always. Thatâs how she found herself up and ready to go way earlier than she expected to go see her grandparents for a few hours. Marley tried to talk herself out of it, citing that Jake was finally in town after being gone for weeks and she was supposed to see him for lunch. She had only been talking about it for days and with their background (and love for Jake), she thought they would have understood. Obviously not. Then once they brought up the fact that she wouldnât be home and around family for much longer, she knew they had suckered her in to tagging along. Mentioning that she had control over the radio helped persuade her too.
âIâm only agreeing to this if you promise me that weâll be back in time for me to see Jake.â She called out to her parents over Teddyâs excitement to visit family in the background. Marley slipped on her winter boots and coat, which seemed to be a task all on itâs own. Had she mentioned how much she hated winter and the cold? Â
âYeah, yeah, yeah. We know. Gotta be back to see the boyfriend. Wait, you mean heâs actually gonna have time to see you? Must not me rock and roll enough yet.â Her dad teased, earning a major eye roll from Marley. Â
âOh shut up Denny.â Marleyâs mom rebutted as she scattered around the living to get ready for their little trip. âGive the poor girl a break. Sheâs young and in love and blah.â Millie exclaimed with a laugh. And of course, Teddy had to chip in. âMarley and Jake, sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G!â
A loud groan escaped Marleyâs lips. âShut up Teddy!â She exclaimed, giving him a good nudge before turning to her parents. âCan we please go now?â In her mind, the sooner they left, the sooner they could get to her grandparents and home and thus the sooner she would be with Jake. As bad as it was, that was her main concern. She just wanted to see Jake. It was the main thing on her mind when she rolled out of bed this morning and it was still at the forefront of her mind. Then again, when wasnât he on the forefront of her mind? Today was just even worse because she knew he was only a ten or fifteen minute drive away and there was nothing she could do about it.
Thankfully the time spent at her grandparents seemed to fly by since they understood how anxious Marley was to see Jake. They werenât too testy or offended by her blatant desire to be anywhere but there. Instead they all feasted on her grandmotherâs famous hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls over small talk about a variety of different things, many of which lead back to Adam. They wanted to know how they were doing, how he was doing, and how the band was doing. Needless to say, Marley was definitely grateful that they were as accepting of Adam as they were. It would have been easy to outcast his punk-rock attitude and Marley often wondered if their sentiment would have changed if her parents themselves had a different background.
The closer the clock got to noon, the more antsy Marley became. She truly didnât want to cut off their family time, because like her mom said earlier- time for this was quickly dwindling and if she actually got into Juilliard and attended, then these moments would be even more sparse. It wasnât until the young girl checked her phone for the hundredth time in five minutes that her father finally spoke up. âWell, we better get the little lovebird over here back or else Iâm pretty sure sheâs going to spontaneously combust and we canât have that, can we kiddo?â Marley sent him another disapproving look but definitely was not going to argue with him. After bidding each of her grandparents goodbye with a tight hug and kiss on the cheek, she carefully shuffled to the car, ready to return to Jake.
Her foot tapped impatiently on the floorboard as her father weaved through the curvy Oregon roadways. Beethoven was blasting to the speakers, much to everyone elseâs dismay despite that Teddy was too preoccupied with the music currently playing in his headphones. But even her own choice of classical music was not calming her down. Excitement and nerves were surging through her. âCanât you drive any faster?â She questioned, only to see a shake of a head in the rearview. âNo way honey. These roads are bad enough as it is. I know you want to see Jake, but Iâd rather you be late than not show up at all.â Marley simply let out a frustrated groan and leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes. At this rate she was never going to be able to see him before his show, but she wasnât going to say that.
It was within a few moments that her life was going to change forever whether she knew it in that instant or not. Her eyes shot open as she felt the car lurching sideways. Marley had to clue what was happening but she was certain however, that the car was definitely not in the lane anymore. She could feel the vehicle jerk forward as she heard the screeching of the sliding brakes on the ice road and the horrendous crushing noise of metal on metal. From what she could tell, they had hit some other car but Marley couldnât tell how or why it happened. The worst though, was hearing the screams of both her parents and little brother as the car tossed them all around. She tried to reach out to brace Teddy, but the vehicle was throwing her around so much that she had lost control of her movements. Glass was shattering around her and flying everywhere and she could feel the metal infringing on her space. Had the car flipped or was that just in her imagination? Maybe this was all her imagination, but the pain that she was starting to feel only proved to her that this was actually happening. Marley felt a sudden impact after moving for what felt like hours. Suddenly she stopped moving and she could only wonder whether or not she was still in the car. Where were her parents and Teddy? Were they alright? She tried to call out for them but nothing came out because everything hurt.
At that point, Marley was sure that she wasnât in the car anymore. She felt cold, hard ground underneath her and was pretty sure that meant she was thrown from the vehicle. Her vision was blurry and practically non existent but she was sure that she saw the tiny vehicle that belonged to her family crushed and flipped upside down. More importantly though, she couldnât find her family and that scared her more than anything. Then Jake flashed into her mind. She was supposed to be seeing him; he promised it would happen. Ironically enough, he wasnât the one breaking the promise this time. Tears formed into her eyes and she felt like she could scream from the pain yet there was nothing she could do except hope that someone would come to their rescue or who knew what would happen. Marley could feel her body getting colder and colder. Were those sirens that she was hearing or was it just her imagination? She couldnât tell but she hoped that was the case. Unfortunately, Marley wasnât able to find out because suddenly everything went black.
Ooc- if you guys go with what happens in the book are you gonna do flashback paras and stuff? Or are you taking the relationship part of the story and not the crash?
ooc: You are just going to have to wait and see anon! Itâs worth the wait, I promise! :]
