I do appreciate what lore welders do and don’t begrudge the fun in trying to make doctor who at least somewhat coherent but it does rub me the wrong way when newish fans then get misled into thinking popular fan theories are actual text

and I’m not saying that to privilege certain parts of doctor who “canon” above others. I genuinely believe the “it’s all canon” and/or “doctor who has no canon” but like I say in my other post that goes around: no one is required to remember or incorporate all of it.

To use a tv show example: there are now two versions of The War Games. One where the War Chief is a time lord the Doctor knows and one where he’s all but stated to be the Master. Both of these are “canon” as far as I’m concerned, but to go on tardis.wiki and say definitively the War Chief is the Master would be wrong. It’s the quantum superposition I was talking about the other day. The War Chief is and isn’t the master and there are eu works that approach it both ways. The existence of one doesn’t erase or retcon the other and everyone gets to pick and choose what they want. Hell hold both in your mind based on whatever’s fun that day.

I think we do a disservice to new fans when we directly or indirectly imply that doctor who has a more coherent narrative than it does.

Thinking about the idea of Fitz inheriting his mothers schizophrenia and something something altered perceptions of reality plus psychic powers being an actual thing in doctor who means he can now catch glimpses of the doctors higher dimensions, naturally he starts freaking out worried that he’s losing his grip on reality and is going to end up like his mother, the doctor reassures him that what he’s seeing is real and that time lords are just like that, Fitz is super relieved by this until after a few seconds the doctor adds ‘although you can probably see it because you’re schizophrenic’

i don't understand the people who want to retcon the timeless child. you literally don't need to retcon it, because you can't retcon doctor who. it doesn't have an established canon, so all that retconning achieves is bringing more attention to the thing you hate. doctor who explicitly stated that the doctor is half-human, and everyone just ignores that, because it's stupid. it's still canon. it happened in the show. but no one ever picks up on it. it's the same with the master and the drums. it's canon. the master has heard drums in his head since he was a kid. but also that's monumentally stupid so it's never been mentioned since the doctor falls, and that was only to acknowledge it happened then ignore it forever. because it's so fucking stupid oh my god

i sometimes see people suggest that the doctor speaks gallifreyan and the tardis translates it, but i tend to think that tardises don't translate gallifreyan. the time lords wouldn't want alien lowlifes sullying their precious language, you know. and also even if he was speaking gallifreyan at first, i think his years trapped with unit probably got him into the habit of speaking english. or at least not gallifreyan. i don't know, maybe he was speaking hungarian the entire show. he probably switches up languages to keep things interesting. but one thing he's definitely not speaking most of the time is gallifreyan.

One great thing about 60s Who, especially Hartnell era is how by the end of each harrowing adventure the characters look suitably fuuucked uuuup. Dirty faces, hair's fucked up, clothes torn...if they've been running through a swamp from a tentacle monster the production really took the time to make it look like they've been running through a swamp from a tentacle monster. Whereas Fifteen manually hurls an ancient Death God into the howling vortex at the center of time and doesn't even break a sweat.
