Using Technology in Physical Education
Written by Jennifer Mueller Inglis
How do you use technology in your physical education class? As all teachers know it is impossible to avoid technology if you want to keep your students engaged. We are also learning that technology gives us more opportunities to create assessments that measure cognitive abilities. The same is true for physical education.
Gym class needs technology to keep kids engaged and interested. The following list ten advances in technology that educate students about health, nutrition, and exercise while keeping them attuned to their favorite thing: technology.
1. Fast Food Calories: gives detailed nutritional information on the largest fast food chains so students can make wise snack choices after school.
2. Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker: has calorie information on over one million foods, keeps track of what you eat on your desktop, and can be used offline, too.
3. MyPyramid app: helps people eat more balanced meals, but beware; it was developed by Campbells, so there are many suggestions that include Campbells’ products
4. ITrain: allows students to download MP3 workouts when exercising without personal instruction. There is also a teen version called: iTeenTrain.
5. Map My Run:Map out a running course with GPS. Can be viewed online and passed along through social media.
6. Why Things Products like Wi-Fi Body Scale: requires a special scale plus app, but allows individuals to track their weight, body fat, and BMI instantly.
7. Fitocracy: Much like FourSquare, Fitocracy has users check in and win badges for their fitness goals that created and saved to the app.
8. JEFIT: Completely app-based, JETFIT offers user-created, strength-training routines. It also presents a detailed anatomy of muscle groups so students can see how the strength training affects certain muscles.
9. iTreadmill: It’s a pedometer, keeps track of calories burned, and tracks distance and time run whether inside or out.
10. LiveStrong MyQuit Coach: Although this app may have limited use in most schools, it helps people design a plan to quit smoking that includes monitoring cigarettes smoked and budgeting issues.
