Oh dear. Grumpy husband is grumpy. The Netherlands lost their Euro football match.
Now, neither of us care much for the sport but...it's the Netherlands. His homeland. Naturally, he's going to support the team.
Time to burrito cuddle the man.
너와 함께 있을 때 비로소 살아 있음을 난 느끼게 돼~
Is anyone else like this? As a kid and even in adulthood in workplaces, I have always needed to doodle in order to maintain focus on and retain important information. My notebook margins are always filled with fun patterns :)
PSA about ADHD
✦ADHD is not a personality quirk
- some things that tag along with ADHD are:
~sensory processing disorder
~executive dysfunction
~poor fine motor skills
~sensory overloads (that lead to meltdowns)
~sensory seeking (self stimming)
~hyperfixations
~moderate to severe memory problems
~Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria- is an extreme emotional sensitivity and emotional pain triggered by the perception that one is being rejected, teased, or criticized. The emotional response is complete with suicidal ideation and people suffering from RSD often get misdiagnosed with serious personality disorders. RSD is only seen in people with ADHD and the emotional sensitivity/reaction is much more severe than that of a neurotypical person.
✦Some other “fun” ADHD things!
~inability to regulate emotions
~no concept of time
~noticeable public stimming (resulting in stares from neurotypicals)
~no impulse control
~insomnia
~listen but cannot absorb what is being said
~no volume control
~increased inability to focus when emotional
~difficulty stopping a task and transitioning to the next
~social anxiety
~higher levels on generalized anxiety
~extremely forgetful
~”all or nothing” mentality
@ neurotypicals- some things to be aware of:
- you cannot hyperfixate. only people who are neurodivergent can hyperfixate. please don’t use that word when describing your latest obsession :-)
- please don’t stare at neurodivergent people who are stimming in public
- be respectful of those who actually need fidget toys so they can subtly stim in public
- if we forget something you tell us it is not because we don’t care, we just have a million other thoughts racing through our mind and no way to filter through them.
- please be gentle with us. no don’t tip toe around us and treat us like we aren’t human, but be aware that even offhand comments can trigger RSD. no we aren’t being too sensitive, our brains are wired differently than yours.
never forget that ADHD is a real disability and it affects our everyday lives in ways that often we don’t even realize
My brain pre-coronavirus: we’ll do it later
My brain now: we’ll do it later—
Me: after what
Brain: ...what?
Me: we’ll do it after WHAT? There’s nothing else to do! What’s stopping us?
Brain: ...
Executive Dysfunction: well damn no need to call me out like that
some tips for doing online school if you aren’t used to it, as a 3-year-straight online high schooler with adhd and depression:
timers. seriously. set lots and lots of timers on your phone, 2-5 minutes apart each time until you properly wake up/get started on your task. it will be infuriating, you will be mad, but you have to get it done
music! listen to music. if you download spotify on your desktop, you get all the same functions you would otherwise get on premium on mobile, save for intermittent ads that (as far as i remember) aren’t as common as they are on mobile anyway.
different playlists, different moods, have some variety, but figure out what music you can listen to in the background without getting distracted!
i recommend basic ambience like rain or nature sounds, along with instrumentals or soft indie bands, OR hozier ,
figure out where you work best. different areas of your house will have different energies. are your parents home, and you need someone to make sure you stay on track? try to work with them in the room, just to make sure you dont go off on a tangent somewhere on the web. family too loud? bedrooms, closets, bathrooms etc can be good ways to get away.
HEADPHONES OR EARBUDS ARE GODSENDS (provided you can use them without discomfort)
do NOT beat yourself up about not maintaining a schedule. you will slip. you will snooze all your alarms. you will sleep through your alarms. that is okay. you are human. just try again next time, and maybe add a few more if you have to.
if you struggle with eating on time and are able to do so, keep food within arm’s reach! also something to drink, preferably water, but anything will do in a pinch.
put a trash bag next to your work space! you are going to need it
it’s okay to take breaks! since ive been doing it for 3 years, ive adjusted, so i don’t get frequent screen migraines now, but they WILL come. keep some headache medicine on hand, keep your screen brightness low, don’t strain your eyes. look away from the screen every now and then, and please remember to blink
it’s super easy to forget basic hygiene when you’re stuck at home all day. set reminders to shower/brush your teeth/make sure you’ve gone to the bathroom/etc
don’t be afraid to claim internet/device failure if you don’t make it to a class session or turn in an assignment on time. it’s okay. it’s not a good habit to use, but just saying “it wouldn’t work, but i have it figured out now and will strive to (do better next time)” is fine. it’s okay. you’ll adjust.
common excuses: frozen, excessive lag, internet connection issues, battery died, etc.
most importantly, BREATHE. breathe. it’s okay. you’re okay. you’re going to be just fine. things are alright. things will be alright. your schedule has been thrown off and you’re in an unfamiliar environment in a time of crisis, and things may feel beyond your control. many of them are. just breathe. you can control that. you are going to be okay, i promise.
a lot of us are working from home now, pretty abruptly. it’s hard, and especially if you’re like me, a sudden lack of structure coupled with really harsh self-expectations/a tense or unforgiving temperament is really challenging.
i started working from home fulltime this year, and my stop it series is a set of doodled observations i’ve made about the obstacles, bad habits, and unhealthy expectations i’ve found myself running into as i adjust. i hope maybe they can be helpful to other people too!
please check out the linked tag bc i have further observations/clarifications on these in the captions of the individual posts, but i figured it’d be good to finally dump all the notes i’ve made so far into one place.
and a final note on what i’ve run into as i get used to working from home: it is a really really difficult balance for me, bc on one hand i really NEED a lot of self-discipline and productivity assists to get things done and make enough money to survive. but on the other hand, a loooooot of productivity advice/motivation/tools out there are really heavily keyed into capitalism and the concept of productivity as self-worth, and it’s easier than you think to slide into destructive thinking because you’re trying to keep yourself on track. do what you have to do, but make sure that the measures you take to try to make home employment work and get things done are always abt helping yourself do what you need to do without strife, not wringing as much work out of yourself as possible.
Family ADHD things
People who can swim are more likely to drown than people who can’t
I don't think you understand the concept of "being able to swim"
Unofficial diagnosis, online tests, self diagnosis, memes, stories from others, etc etc etc literally all the signs: ADHD positive
Me, finally signing up for an official diagnosis and treatment: but what if I'm just faking it :')
Update: I'm not faking it :')
Everyone who’s been talking to me knows i’ve been working on this comic about wlws and cats for a while and i’m so so happy it’s finally here!!! :D
