Lone Student Eating Breakfast
To the lone student eating breakfast,
Seated on the Old Capitol’s back steps,
Legs dangling seven feet above the ground,
Bagel sandwich in hand and drink in reach.
To the lone student breaking your fast,
In the shadow of the Old Capitol
Cast by the weak sun of a spring morning,
Seated on the edge of the cold concrete.
To the lone student sipping your drink,
Gazing across the narrow flood plain
To the campus skyline across the way,
Outlined by the sky and lit by the sun.
To the lone student finishing breakfast,
Why did you come here? To watch cars drive by?
To watch people walk past? To listen to
Lawnmowers mow, and helicopters take off?
To the lone student sitting in solitude,
Who are you? What are you thinking?
What turmoil drove you from your studies?
Where did you come from? Where are you going?
