Duke Franklin Creech
Woodblock Print by Claudia Wilburn 2018
24″ x 36″ Collaged and mounted to wood panel.
Just finished printing this block. The final will be a collaged altered proof.
The screen porch is almost finished. Lots and lots of fiddling details but I am excited about the print.
Next woodblock in this series underway. My dad's father is one of the young boys and my great grandfather is the old man on the left.
Piece about my paternal grandfather. Mixed Media: digital prints, collage, found materials, family memorabilia & acrylic paint
Progress on the image of Duke. It is a long process to carve these blocks, but I love what is happening with the lines here.
Not yet titled piece with my Great grandfather and my mother as a child.
Bottom image is the woodblock, top image is the finished altered proof mounted on wood panel. 24″ x 36″

All the pieces listed above are Altered Woodblock Prints. In short, I printed the woodblock on several different papers and after prints had dried I ripped them apart and reassembled the pieces.
The final products shown here have been mounted on wood panels and are 24 inches x 36 inches. They are part of a collaborative exhibition and I will post the collaborative pieces as soon as the show is photographed as some pieces required special installation. 9 Words Artist Statement:
In the creation of this collaborative show, we have independently created 9 works that are inspired by and/or an interpretation of the chosen words. Because we are from different generations, have had different family lives, different experiences and different baggage associated with these words that has lead to our final individual pieces. As expected, there is much contrast in these works. The remaining 9 works were created collaboratively and allowed us celebrate commonalities, such as the fact that we are both women, educators and artists.
Statement: Claudia Wilburn
My intention upon beginning this artistic exploration was to draw on obvious experiences in my life relating to the chosen words. The sketches I produced at that time were very illustrative with regard to obvious imagery associated with the words. Upon development of this I was diverted from my initial course because of two things, process and discovery. I had decided that I wanted to create large scale, hand carved, woodblock prints and that I wanted the process to include collaging a variety of colors and texture from paper. This process is one I had used in my last body of work and I enjoyed the physicality of producing those pieces. The second element that changed the course of my work for this series was a cicada I found on my back porch (inspiration can be found in unexpected places). I observed the body of the insect and the beauty of the proportions and translucency of the wings and thought of the insect, known for its loud call; this became the inspiration for Bellow. Subsequently, I began to apply the chosen words to particular insects for a variety of reasons. Once I had made the decisions on concept and process, I set to working though compositions. When I began to actually create the pieces I allowed myself to have fun in the process of producing and arranging the compositions, I believe that come across in the colors and varied elements collaged into the final pieces.
