Endless AE-1. Some toying around with the hunk of metal that is this camera, and some fun colored gels.
It has been a while, as I moved to New York City on a whim, but here is my final film, Beyond the Mountain.
My thesis film Beyond The Mountain is playing at RIT’s Carlson Theater tomorrow at 12:30. It took a lot of physical and Mental capacity to create and is only 3 minutes long. Come on by. ~ #stopmotion #animation #create #film #claydogh (at Rochester, New York)
Rework of the birds action, also his eyes have lighter pupils now.
Todays edit of some clips.
A few more shots roughed out.
Here we are! First steps into animation!
Final script lines, without context.
“Now, how will I get across?”
“Oh my?”
“Ah, you admire my sword?”
“How about I’ll make you a deal.”
“A bridge, for the sword!”
“It’s done?”
“Ah”
“Hah Hah Hah”
Now I just have to make all the acting bang on.
A second test at dialog
“Hello!” the samurai calls, and the mountain echoes back his voice.
“Hello! Hello! hello…”
He hears something different respond after and calls, “Who goes there? Show yourself!”
A bird creature appears on the other side of the ravine, distantly and hard to see.
The samurai squints, “What in the name of -”
Before he finishes the bird jumps down, the man makes a sound of surprise at what he sees. The bird then climbs onto the side he stands on, and shuffles around him, strange unearthly sounds coming from deep in his throat, sounding questioning.
“Are you the reason the bridge is out?” the samurai asks warily. The bird shakes its head profusely and points to fraying rope or whatever. The samurai looks over the edge and cannot see the bottom. As he’s looking over, the bird gets closer and looks at the sword at his side. The samurai sees the creature and pulls the sword slightly out of the sheathe.
“You’ve got a good eye, sir. One can’t help but admire such a legendary sword. I suppose the tales of Amakuni’s fancy-word battles made it blah blah blah” The bird reaches to grab it but the samurai pulls away. “Uh uh uh,” he says scoldingly, “a blade as fine as this blah blah blah. What do you have for me?”
The bird looks through his pockets but pulls out nothing. Maybe he goes to a stash of knick knacks he goes through, but cannot find anything. The samurai looks around.
“How about this for a trade,” he says, “if you can fix the bridge so I can continue on my way, I’ll give you my sword.” The bird nods and grabs the samurai’s hand to shake it profusely, sealing the deal.
The bird sets to work, throwing rope across the ravine to start the bridge and jumps out of sight. The samurai watches him for a moment before sitting down under the cherry blossom tree. He nods off to sleep.
The samurai awakens to the bird man poking/stroking his face. The samurai pushes his talon away and is then shaken awake.
“What?! What do you want?” the samurai asks. He is pulled over to the new bridge by the creature. It looks sturdy for such short work. “I’m impressed,” he says, “I’ll admit, I had my doubts.”
He starts to walk across the bridge, but is pulled back by the bird. The creature holds his hand outstretched, waiting for the sword.
“Ah,” the samurai says, “our bargain.” He removes the hilt from his belt and throws it hard over the creatures head. It lands by the cherry blossom tree. The creature runs towards it and pulls the sword from the hilt, revealing it to be broken. The creature squawks and turns back to the samurai, still holding the broken blade.
The samurai laughs from the bridge. “You fool, you think the real sword would be worth a mere bridge? Ha! Blah blah something else”
The samurai laughs as he continues across. The bird looks down at the broken blade and to the man’s retreating back. He runs to the bridge and cuts it. The samurai falls.

Script without Bird
“Hello!” Anyone out there?
A bird creature creature pokes his head out from behind a rock on the other side of the chasm.
“Yes you there!”
It freezes after coming out and looks at samurai.
“Hello?”
It jumps into the ravine
“Oh.” Samurai looks over the edge into the ravine.
The creature bursts jumping up out of the crack to the right of samurai. He lands, frightening samurai.
Looking out and then turning to the bird, ignoring his question “Are you the reason the bridge has collapsed?”
The bird strafes around samurai, looking him up and down. He takes particular interest in the samurai’s sword and its intricate handle.
“Ah this old thing?”
The bird paces.
“Let’s say we make a trade, yes?”
The bird paces around him “Hm”
“If you fix this bridge so that I may cross, I will give you this wonderful relic!”
He holds out his hand to offer a handshake.
The bird grabs his hand haphazardly and the deal is struck.
The bird twitches his head up eyes wide. He then runs over to the edge of the broken bridge. Bird reaches down into the ravine and grabs a rope. He throws the rope hard into the distance. It catches and he pulls hard stringing it tout. Then he loops it and ties it off on a nearby rock. Holding onto the rope he jumps into the chasm out of sight. The rope moves as he scales along it.
Samurai steps up the base of the tree and plops down with his arms on his knees.
He lays back.
Cut to black
Bird’s face really close to the camera. Cut to the creature really close above samurai waiting for him to awake. Samurai startled scoots back a bit.
“It is done!” Bird squawks. He waits in anticipation.
The samurai rises up a bit to see the finished rope bridge swaying in the wind,
“Well, Well then! I must be off!”
He walks to the bridge and the birds flinches.
Samurai swings around, “ah, our bargain!”
The bird flicks his head in agreement practically hopping.
Samurai unhooks the scabbard, takes it in both hands. He then tosses it towards the bird and turns away to the bridge.
The Bird terrified looking up at it in the air. We see it flip in the air and come down.
The bird jumps and slides to grab it just before it hits the ground.
Camera pull tight on bird, the intricate scabbard in his hand. He takes it in both hands and unsheathes the gleaming blade, to find, it is shattered a foot after its hilt.
The birds head flickers and twitches around frantically terrified, he looks to the bridge.
Samurai looks back, suspended on the rope bridge.
Holding up the blade shard Bird gasps with eyes wide open.
“Hah hah hah” the Samurai walks down the bridge to he other side.
We see the back of the bird standing with the shattered blade in hand. He holds it up, and chops down on the rope railing.
Deciding what shots to begin on.
More rough Pop Through. Starting to get a grasp on some aspects and still severely lacking in other areas... I’ll get it in time.
My lighting wasn’t right at all last time. I think I am almost getting there. Definitely is coming along though.
Test Audio, test pop through, real rough, just trying out the layouts.
So heres the far off land beyond the bridge. As well as the finished tree and some unlit mountains... Almost there.
I have been burning through extra set pieces. Breaking into overdrive is sometimes easier than moseying along a project.
