Stay warm by learning how to make glass at The Studio this winter. There are still spaces available in many of our week-long intensive classes, including Robin Brailsford’s class, “New American Glass Mosaics: A Primer.” This innovative class, taking place January 28 through February 2, will provide the opportunity to apply 20th-century experiments to a new 21st-century technique: LithoMosaics. LithoMosaics marries the beauty of glass mosaics to the scale and durability of concrete. Each day will include time in the Rakow Research Library or Museum collections for inspiration, as well as studio time for hands–on design, dialogue, and fabrication. The works will be inspired by, but not imitative of, the mosaics the class will be researching.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone! I wish you endless love & happiness and may all your wishes come true! Have a wonderful time with your loved ones and… Uh… uh… Okaaay, that’s all. I’ve never been good at wishes. I can go home now *jumps into a trash can*

Amber dragon. A sphere of fluorescent amber from the Dominican Republic (see https://www.facebook.com/TheEarthStory/posts/588657784528603) has been carved in the Chinese style into a sphere with rampant sky dragon couchant, presumably flying above the waves of an unknown sea that have been ingeniously carved to form a base. In honor of Cinco de Mayo: here’s a colorful serape woven with the Mexican flag and a jaguar, Mexico’s most enduring symbolic animal. Olmec, Mayan, and Aztec cultures all associated jaguars—the largest cat native to the Americas—with bravery, hunting, warfare, and power.
