Tips to Make the Most out of your Mirrors
Mirrors are the most versatile of the decorative accessories that you can get your hands on. Not only do they add to the décor wonderfully but are also good at enhancing what they reflect. And lets not forget the mundane tasks that these are good at! If you are planning to incorporate a good mirror in your décor, here are a few tips that will help you ensure that you use the mirrors in the best way possible in your décor.
With large mirrors you can elevate an accessory by placing the mirror in front of it. But make sure that the accessory in question is worthy of being reflected. Here is what you can consider. A show-stopping chandelier, a window opening out into a garden or a fabulous gallery wall of artwork that will add to the wow factor. Bold and beautiful is always better if you are making use of the mirror as an accessory to reflect something decorative.
You can place a mirror between two windows which will help maximise natural light. We love how Bistro Pier mirrors can be used for the space between windows. The very name suggests that these were designed to be placed on a pier, a wall between two windows that support an upper structure.
If you have walls that are oddly shaped, round mirrors are a better deal then as compared to square or rectangular ones. You can also create a grouping of small mirrors as a decorative element to fill up empty walls.
If you are thinking of a overmantle mirror, make sure that you get the size right. Make sure that the mirror is the same width as your mantel or maybe a few inches smaller on either side. You can always go for taller mirrors here so that the ceiling feels higher.
Strategically place a mirror where the light can be reflected to brighten up the room. A small room can appear bigger and can open up by strategically placing mirrors in the décor. These are two of the oldest and the best tricks which have and will never really fall out of favour.
Make sure that you pick a mirror that will sit well in your décor. You need a piece that in some way complements the décor or will land up looking out of place.
At Cleall Antiques, we have a wonderful range of mirrors to suit all possible décor requirements. From pier mirrors, small mirrors to portrait and antique landscape mirrors, the options are many and quite versatile. Visit our website to have a look through the options.
Taking care of your Mirrors
Antique mirrors need extra care and love as compared to your regular mirrors as these usually have a silver or mercury layer. With time, they gather smudges and blurry spots. Hence taking extra care on a regular basis is very important. Mirrors when hung on the walls make their backsides prone to gathering moisture. The exposure over the years also makes the silver layer deteriorate and begins to peel off. Upkeep of antique mirrors is always a very easy job. While regular maintenance can be done easily, you can always consult an expert to guide you through the process or help you with the restoration in extreme cases.
We give you some tips here about taking care of your antique mirrors using different cleaning agents: Make sure that you clean the glass and not the silvered back of your antique mirror. Avoid the use of any strong chemicals that might damage the glass. A combination of rubbing alcohol and water often works well. Some people make use of baking soda but we strongly recommend not to use this in the cleaning process as any abrasive cleaner which will damage the mirror.
You can alternatively wipe the glass clean with a lint free linen cloth dipped in methylated spirit as well. You can also spray some vinegar over the filmed spot and rub it with newspaper without applying a lot of pressure. Make sure that you do not use vinegar on the frame if it is made of wood. You can also make use of shaving cream with a microfiber cloth to wipe the mirror clean. This will help you take the fogginess away. The cream leaves a coating on the mirror that helps delay the forming of fog for longer. In case the smudges aren’t a lot, you can always stick to regular water. The glass can be wiped down with water that is infused with a few drops of ammonia and carefully wrung out. Always finish the wiping process with a newspaper or a lint free cloth to have a clean glass.
Always be careful about not touching the frame with any of these cleaning agents. Be it a homemade remedy or a store bought one, you may land up spoiling the frame. If the smudges are close to the frame, stick to plain water only. No matter what method you use, make sure that you do not let any moisture go behind the glass as it will cause the mirror’s silvering to deteriorate overtime. In case the damage is too much to take care of on your own, get in touch with us at Cleall Antiques. We also have a fabulous stock of 19th century mirrors that you can have a look at.

Decorating with Antique Wall Mirrors
The design possibilities that an antique mirror can bring in to your decor are endless. Beautifully distressed, the signs of age add to the look and appeal of the mirror in a beautiful way. Gone are the days of sticking to the safe options. If you love to experiment with pieces that add personality to your space, antique carved mirrors make a great option. If classic and ornate is your design calling, you have some wonderful options available out there.
Gilded frames, ornate crests or beautifully distressed patina of the frames are just some of the attributes of antique mirrors. When it comes to decorating, mirrors make a wonderful addition and something as interesting as the distressed mirrors will make a charming addition to the decor. Here are our favourite ways of incorporating a charming antique mirror in the decor:
Hanging a mirror strategically can infuse your decor with classic elegance. And if it can reflect something that is worthwhile, it can be completely transformative.
Although ornate mirrors can be tricky to work with in a completely modern decor, these are at the same time quite versatile too. Think of some element that will help you incorporate it in the decor to achieve a cohesive theme.
A statement mirror in the hallway also works wonderfully well-adding charm at the entrance itself and give you the perfect spot for a once over before you step out. Your bathroom and bedroom are usual spots for large mirrors, but living rooms and kitchens apart from hallways can benefit well from these as well.
If you can place the mirror in a way that it reflects light, there is no better way to brighten up a room.
Installing an antique ornate mirror in a small room will instantly make the space appear bigger.
Overmantle mirrors above fireplaces or pianos can effortlessly accentuate the natural period look elevating the look of the space. Alternatively, hanging these above modern media cabinets or in the dining will help create an eclectic feel in the decor.
You do not need to sacrifice good taste or style while designing a small space. All you need is a good mirror that will help you open up the space and also look stunning at the same time. Visit us at Cleall Antiques to check out our collection.
