Are Cyber-bullies just bored?....
Online bullies are no different to bullies in the playground, its just another way of hurting someone. So why do trolls, troll? Is it for attention, or to feel bigger than they really are? Or is it simply because they are bored? That is exactly what I wanted to find out this week.
When I was kid, bullying happened at lunchtime, and the punishments were as simple of detention time. These days, it is pushed much further than the schoolyard… but what do these kids get out of spending their spare time writing mean things to another classmate? It seems that cyber bulling isn’t necessarily done to hurt the other person; it’s more to gain some sort of reaction, and it usually stems from the bullies having problems of their own (Delete Cyber Bullying, 2014).
This week’s article written by Danah Boyd, looks at 2 different point of views when it comes to bullying, and it is very interesting to see that sometimes people don’t even know that they are hurting someone, or maybe they do but they choose to ignore it. However more times then not it is due to the bully having an underlying problem (Boyd, 2014).
So if the reason bullies are turning to online methods to hurt others, how do we stop this? I do not think it is as simple as stopping the bulling from happening. Every person has personal issues, and the only real way to stop lashing out is to learn how to deal with the problems the bully has head on. Hurting other people isn’t a solution for the bully, and perhaps more counseling should be brought into schools to teach young people this in detail.
Despite all of this, the best way to stop the bullies is to educate people who use social media, and teach them how to handle these situations if they eve arise. Websites such as Cybersmart whelp to educate young people and their peers on how to tackle these situations( Cybersmart, 2015).
My best advise? If they hurt you, block them. Don't like what you see? Block it! the best tool social media has is the block function, so don't put yourself through the pain, just remove it from your sight!
