The thing that I love about Doctor Who - above everything else, & there is a LONG list, don't get me wrong - is the sense of… continuity. Continuity & recontextualization.

Something that I thought was kind of silly & weird will pop up again, a decade later, & it's like a puzzle piece dropping into place because something new ends up changing the way I see it, or changes the way it's done in the first place.

Sometimes it's just something funny, honestly? Like. Watching 3's era with the knowledge that there is another functioning TARDIS like THREE BUILDINGS OVER makes it that much FUNNIER to me, & more poignant in its own way.

I love the mindfuck of the fact that the Third Doctor (as played by Jon Pertwee) would be comfortable & knowledgable on subjects that hadn't been invented in the 70s such as cell phones, even though his era is so intensely 70s you can practically taste the polyester. I love the fact that maybe something in 30 years will re-position 13's era because some writer who fell in love with it will do something like Chibs did with the Morbius Doctors.

MOFFAT: River's not just his wife - she's his widow. somewhere in the terrible future, on a battlefield, the 45th Doctor dies in her arms and makes her the same promise she once made him - it's not over for you, you'll see me again. So River buries her husband and off she goes to have lots of adventures with his younger selves and confuse the hell out of them. Until, of course, she ends up in the data core of the library planet, and realises she'll never seem him again. And then she starts to wonder why anyone would call a moon "Doctor". Ah... Yeah, some version of that could still work. The Doctor worrying that she'll get lonely in the library, and popping his dying mind inside a moon. God, look at those words. I actually typed those words.

RTD: I've never forgotten that Doctor Moon thing, it's so clever. Every time i watch that story, I think, it's him, it's The Doctor, and no one knows.

s10 twelve is twelve at peace. post-heaven sent clara is clara at peace. with their mutually obsessive link broken, twelve is free to love and care for others without clara eclipsing everything else just by being near him. without the restraints of twelves morality and her own mortality, clara is free to live recklessly, to keep going forever. the people they are at the end of their story don’t work together, but they only BECAME those people because they were put together.

at the start, clara is a schoolteacher trying to maintain a committed relationship. at the start, twelve is afraid that he is heartless. they want to become more like the other. and they succeed.

swap! twelve is a schoolteacher who reestablishes a committed relationship with his wife (as well as makes a different kind of commitment to missy). and clara is, functionally, literally heartless.
