Asking for a friend who just posted a clexa story on ao3 and isn't getting a lot of hits, etc., like they did before. Is the Clexa fandom dead? If so, what killed it?

I don’t know what your friend considers to be an indicator of good engagement but while the fandom isn’t dead, it has shrunk considerably.

It’s the natural order of things really, especially when there are new shows and shiny new pairings popping up all the time (everyone on my dash seems to have a heavy fixation with Arcane right now). Engagement is lower because many people have moved on and probably don’t read as much—or any—Clexa fic these days, although they might make exceptions for favourite writers.

That’s not to say there aren’t diehard devotees still around - we see you and we love you! But it is harder to reach an audience as a writer now. You have to do self-promotion on tumblr and hope that some popular blogs rec your stuff. Since tumblr is such a visual medium, fics are far more likely to be reblogged and gain traction if they include a moodboard or edit as well as a compelling summary or teaser/excerpt (but this won’t automatically translate to kudos on AO3, much less comments). Posting snippets, headcanons and extras gets readers more invested and can build a following for multi-chapter fics, especially. So while there are some tools at your friend’s disposal to help generate interest in their fic, they’re probably not going to see the same level of engagement as when the fandom was at its peak circa 2015-2018 aka the golden age of Clexa :’)

A year ago i started writing this story after impulsively quitting my job(In the middle of a pandemic) and i regretted it so much afterwards but it was too late. Quarantine was still in full command and i barely left my house not even to get fresh air. I would wake up at noon after not being able to go to sleep until 5 am and life felt pointless. i had no where to go and nothing to do and not soon after i developed a eating disorder, i’ve never said that out loud but it’s true. i wouldn’t eat and if i did it would be cheez its and juice and i lost over twenty pounds which doesn’t sound like a lot but regularly i am about 130poudns. I have been writing fanfiction since about 2016 and Because of you was the first new story i wrote since. it gave me a reason to wake up and the comments gave me a reason to smile. I am so happy i decided to write this story cause without it i was miserable. If you read this story THANK YOU! Seriously i cannot express how much it meant to me to wake up to the emails saying i had comments and Kudos. This fandom is one of the best things to happen to me and i’m so thankful it exists!

Clexa fandom!

Hey, I’ve been making a ton of pages about the Clexa fandom on Fanlore because the fandom is awesome and should be documented. If you’re not familiar with Fanlore, it’s essentially a fandom history wiki by the Organization for Transformative Works (the same group that owns and runs AO3).

Alright dear friends, I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m never going to finish this fic, but the @goodintentionswipfest​ has given me the motivation to post it all anyhow.

I actually really love this story, but I just can’t seem to summon the atmosphere of it again. I’ll post all six chapters on AO3 over the course of the next two weeks, through October 31.
