Il palombaro indossa, anzitutto, abiti di lana, detti interni, e su questi il vestito impermeabile in tessuto speciale, che ricopre tutto il corpo, fatta eccezione del capo e delle mani, le quali escono fuori, nude, dai polsini delle maniche, tenuti stretti da braccialetti di gomma. La parte superiore del vestito è fissata, mediante perni a galletto, al colletto di rame, su cui, per mezzo di attacco a vite a sesto di giro, s’innesta l’elmo.
