An age old fan of the FF franchise finally gives in and gives other games in the Compilation the old college try. I'm currently replaying Final Fantasy VII, the original game. I'm also working my way through Final Fantasy VI because I played it one time 100 years ago and don't remember anything about it. Terra gets possessed by the bad guys, who have robot monsters that you can sit in that kind of look like the AT-STs from Return of the Jedi. They are called Magi-Tek things, I think. Biggs and Wedge are there. They die. Terra doesn't. Some people kidnap her??? But they are good guys???
Locke is there, maybe? They go to Figaro and Figaro castle can burrow in the sand, which is a pretty weird thing for a castle to do, honestly. Edgar is afraid that Sabin hates him. Sabin doesn't hate him. They have a touching reunion.
Um.
At some point, Terra definitely turns into a pink troll and flies around. I'm pretty sure.
Kefka dumps poison in a river and everyone Cyan ever knew and loved dies tragically, and then Kefka goes to jail and jumps around on a toilet for a while. He doesn't appear to mind being in jail.
Then there is an opera but the opera guy doesn't want to put on the opera because there's this weird asshole who wants to kidnap his opera star. So they make Celes put on her clothes and perform for her because why the fuck not, amirite? And you have to memorize her song, and I'm pretty sure I still know most of it because I only remember the unimportant bullshit, apparently.
The kidnapping asshole is Setzer, who has an airship. He joins your party for some reason, but that's cool because we need an airship.
At some point, Sabin and Cyan are hanging out together and they run into this ninja piece of shit named Shadow, but he randomly leaves your party whenever he feels like it, and if you equip him with anything, he STEALS IT AND DOESN'T HAVE IT ON WHEN HE COMES BACK. Anyway, they go and fight a ghost train, which Sabin can suplex. But if you throw a feather on it, it dies in one hit. I don't honestly know why any of this happens.
Kefka eventually stops being in jail and he finds these statues and if you move them, the world gets destroyed or something. So he moves them, and the world gets destroyed.
Celes learns how to fish, but if you catch the wrong fish, Cid dies and Celes is sad.
Kefka gets a floating continent. You have to go there. If you leave early, Shadow dies.
Then you climb up a pillar of people and Kefka is at the top. You probably save the world if you kill him, but I dunno. I never actually did that.
Before I start playing FF6, I though I would share some of what I remember about the cast of FF6, in whatever random order I happen to remember them in.
Terra: Green haired amnesia girl. She's actually part esper, which makes her good at magic. I'm assuming she has a personality but IDK what it is.
Locke: He's a thief. He has a girlfriend named Rachel who is in a coma or dead or something. I hated him a lot the first time I played, but I don't remember why.
Edgar: King of Figaro, definitely flipped a coin to win the job. He can use cool machinery in battle, including a chainsaw, and he puts on a hockey mask when he uses it. I remember liking him a lot. I also don't remember exactly why.
Sabin: Edgar's twin brother who did not want to be the king. He punches things really hard. He has a mullet. His special ability was a pain to memorize so I always made him use the super basic ones. I think I actually RPed as him once, which is a miracle because I don't remember anything about him anymore. Except that he can suplex trains.
Celes: Super badass sword lady who is definitely the general of some place. She is identical to some lady named Maria. She wears a bathing suit with a cape, I think?? Whatever, she is cool.
Setzer: The guy with the airship. He throws playing cards as a weapon, which makes him cooler than anyone else. I remember him being extremely superficial but I liked him anyway. He has a dead girlfriend named Daryl because he and Locke wanted to have a club. He gambles ?? MAYBE???
Relm: Adorable sassy artist child. She wears a turban and paints Ultros and that is how you defeat Ultros forever, because he doesn't realize how ugly he is until you show him. She equips a paintbrush. I think the draw ability was actually terrible but I don't remember. She's Shadow's daughter and Strago's granddaughter, I think.
Strago: Um, he's....old? He uses magic, I think? Is Strago even his name??
Shadow: Asshole ninja who stole all the shit I bought special for him. You can kill him later in the plot.
Gau: Mowgli.
Mog: A moogle!!!! On your party!!!! I don't remember what he does. Maybe he dances? I seem to remember him dancing. Does he have a personality? Does he have any purpose in the plot? I do not know.
Gogo: A mime who isn't Daryl. I remember hating that theory. I also remember hating Gogo. I have no idea why. I think they are a pain to recruit, so that's probably it.
Umaro: A yeti or something???????
Cyan: I??? FORGOT ABOUT CYAN UNTIL RIGHT NOW??? Like, I literally, an hour ago, recruited him on my FFRK game and immediately put him on my party. He does neat things with his sword. He is Tragic and Sad, and has a Dead Wife and Child. Probably honorable. Angeal with a mustache and a ponytail. Yeah. If he doesn't act like Angeal next time I play, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.
Kefka: Crazy clown guy who destroys the world and dances on toilets. He has his own laugh and an amazing theme song. I'm pretty sure his motivation was “I am fucking nuts” but hey, he did better than any other FF villain, so kudos to him.
Cid: Celes' grandpa, but....not? Actually? Maybe? You can kill him by feeding him shitty fish. He wears a yellow poncho.
Other Characters: I think there was a guy named General Leo who everyone liked, and maybe a guy who looked like a lion named Banon. They were both good guys, maybe? Or Leo was a bad guy who turned out to be good? Like Beatrix. Except he died, I'm pretty sure. Maybe both of them did.
There was also an octopus named Ultros who showed up and made a lot of weird jokes. Recurring boss sort of thing. In FFRK, they called him Orthos or something, so I'm gonna assume I'm gonna be weirded out by the new translation when I play.
I know I haven't posted an episode of FF7 in a while. I feel a little bit like my playthrough is kind of boring, since my reactions are that of someone who has played the game eight million times. And I'm still working on figuring out a way to play DoC for you guys--which I WILL DO SOMEDAY. I SWEAR I WILL.
In the meantime, though, I got randomly inspired to once again try my hand at FF6. I've played FF6, once, many years ago. I don't remember much. I didn't beat it. I remember a lot of the playable cast, sort of, but the plot is a big ? to me. I've been meaning to give it another go for a while, and I just keep going and playing FF4 instead because FF4 is the epitome of quality and I will hear no argument.
Basically, I feel like an LP of FF6 would be a lot more fun to read for you guys, since my reactions will be more genuine and lacking in the “but I know what happens” department. Plus, it's a “””classic””” so if you haven't played it, you can just...uh...watch me play instead. YEAH.
So, there you go. This post is announcing the imminent arrival of Rydia Plays FF6. I'll use the tag “#rydia plays ff6” for the episodic playthrough posts and “#ff6isms” for non playthrough posts, if you want to block for any reason.
I'm not going to stop FF7, probably? Maybe I will? I don't know. It's just on hold for the moment, I guess.
Zack went to Midgar after escaping the labs with Cloud. This was a terrible idea. There are many reasons this was a terrible idea. Let’s list a few, shall we?
Shinra is after Zack and Cloud. Shinra’s HQ is located in Midgar.
Zack intended to go back to Aerith. Aerith was being monitored closely by the Turks.
Everybody in Shinra knew that Zack had a thing with Aerith.
Zack has absolutely no reason to trust anyone he knew in Midgar apart from Aerith, because everyone he knew had ties to Shinra.
And in the end, going back to Midgar is exactly what got him killed.
So why did he do it? Crisis Core would have us believe that Zack isn’t the smartest of the cast. They push his silly reactions to things on us and even take away some of his canonical badass moments from the OG. I don’t agree with that, which I’ll get in later, but that’s not the point here. The point is that, even if he was as dumb as box of rocks, well, anyone with even half a brain in their head would realize that going to Midgar was the opposite of a good idea.
Part of my way to deal with things I don’t like in canon is to write fanfiction or RP where I either explain things by exploring the character’s thoughts and motivations, or I “fix” things. But Zack bringing Cloud to Midgar is an incredibly important plot point and cannot be glossed over or fixed. So I needed to find a way to explain it. I’ve explored a few possibilities that served me pretty well before CC came out:
Zack knows about Aerith’s natural healing abilities. He thinks she might be able to help Cloud come out of his comatose state.
There is merit to the idea of hiding right under your enemy’s nose. Shinra is not popular in the slums, and there was the possibility of disappearing into the crowd under the plate.
Both of these ideas lost credit due to Crisis Core, however. Aerith is implied to be supervised near constantly by the Turks–Zack couldn’t afford to go near her, honestly. The game (as well as Last Order) also tells us Zack and Cloud had the army on their tail all the way to Midgar, which means the idea of slipping quietly into the slums unnoticed would have been impossible.
Zack needed another motivator, a strong motivator. And I can think of only one such thing.
We’re coming from a long way aren’t we? I can’t believe it. I am actualy just a dork who change fandoms basically all the time and yet, here we are, with.. woah. I’ve never thought I’d have that many wonderful people following me, it is so much.

Yo! So I saw your post about the direction of the buster sword's blade on C's back vs Zs/A's, nd I think it's got to do with the fact that A said he used the blunt side coz use brings about rust, and Z took it like that too, and C is just CHOP!
Yeah, this was talkedabout in some of the reblogs! Zack definitely talks about how heusually hits things with the blunt side in order to keep the swordfrom wear and tear, out of respect for Angeal. (In the actualgameplay, it’s debatable that he actually does this, but we’lllet that slide.) Angeal uses Buster like twice in the entire game,so we can’t really tell how he uses it.
The only problem withthis theory, though, is that hitting the enemy with the blunt side ofthe sword will change the position you wield it, more than how you carry it, and...
....save foot position (which might only be different for the sake of the angle of the art),Cloud and Zack wield Buster in the exact same way.

Last time on Rydia Names Everyone Sephiroth Because She Hates Knowing What Is Going On In The Plot, I wrote you all a beautiful song because I love you.
We’re still in the middle of Cloud’s stupidly long flashback where he defines the term “unreliable narrator,” so with any luck, we’ll...continue on from there at some point. Because hot damn, we’ve been wandering around through Cloud memories for a long time now.
And so we enter the Nibelheim reactor, finally! What could await us here? Only good things, I’m certain.

Sephiroth wants us to believe that everything Hojo does is to try to make himself as great as Professor Gast. But I can’t remember Hojo really ever bringing up Gast (except, of course, when we view the video where he kills Gast). Crisis Core gives us the implications that Hojo is damn good at his job, having received Shinra’s blessing with Project S, over Hollander’s Project G. Gast was a huge part of Project S, of course, but when he cut ties with Shinra, Hojo got credit for Project S.
Does Hojo really care if Gast is a “better” scientist? Did he put people into mako tanks because he wanted to show that he was superior to his predecessor? I feel like he doesn’t actually give a shit, so long as he can continue injecting people with space parasites, and Sephiroth’s analysis here is incorrect.

Cloud, having not seeing the results of Hojo’s experiments before this point, falls right on his fabulous polygonal ass. Interesting to note because, in CC, Zack was surprised but not that surprised. Cloud, though, didn’t have any idea before this point what Shinra was doing.
Sephiroth is completely unruffled by this turn of events. Despite knowing nothing for sure about his own past (though I’m certain he had had to have some guesses by now, given that he knows where Angeal and Genesis came from), he’s certainly aware of the bullshit Shinra likes to pull.
Mako gives people monster cancer.
It was 100% the best decision ever to say this to him right now.

I saw a theory one time that Cloud’s absent father had been a worker for Shinra in the reactor, and that he had been stuffed into one of these pods. While I know that Cloud wasn’t actually inside the reactor when this happened, seeing this scene made me imagine it breaking out like, “MY SOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNN!”

It’s funny to me because at this point in the franchise, we’ve been subject to seeing the horrible, inhumane things Shinra does over and over so many times that I’m like, “what, not everyone?” Then I remember that this is fairly close to the beginning of the game.
I guess Barret was interrupting again.
Interesting to note here, Tifa is listening really closely to this story. Cloud hasn’t told her all of this stuff yet. He told her that he was in Nibelheim, obviously, but he never went into detail about what happened there. And no wonder, I doubt it was the first topic he wanted to chat about!
Although, interestingly enough, scrapped versions of the game script included Cloud revealing his super obsession with Sephiroth much earlier in the game--before, even, we see any of the other clones starting to act up at all. (Then again, that might be why that version was scrapped.)
Retconned in Crisis Core. :C This is stuff actual!Cloud should have remembered too, so we can’t even blame the fact that Cloud heard this whole bit second hand.
The presence of the mansion also fuels the rumor that President Shinra is Cloud’s father.

It sounds like humans used to be Cetra, from Sephiroth’s description here, but I don’t actually trust most of this information, considering it feels like it was left planted here specifically for Sephiroth to find, and also because we know some of this is outdated (i.e. Hojo knew damn well that Jenova wasn’t a Cetra, and he’s known it for a while at this point). Whatever Sephiroth read, it almost sounds like it came out of a fairytale, rather than reality.

So this happened in the 30 seconds it took for me to leave the house.

I hate this because it’s literally Cloud’s house that he tries to go into.
I hate this because it’s Cloud’s house that Cloud is lying half conscious outside of.
Cloud tried to rescue his mom. In CC, Zack doesn’t try to go into the Cloud’s house, so that bit of memory there? That was almost certainly Cloud’s. He went in and couldn’t rescue her, and now he’s lying on the ground just outside. My poor child, come into my arms.
And he’s not done yet.
The villagers not killed in the fire were sliced up by the sword.
For what it’s worth, this cut scene was terrifying back in the day.
I don’t want to be here. Come on, let’s just. Leave Sephiroth and go away somewhere. Yeah.
Tifa arrived before we did.
Considering he dropped the Masamune right there, it seems pretty likely.
Tifa is a passionate person with strong convictions and complex feelings and reactions to things, but this is one of very few times that we see her do something so reckless. Pushed over the edge by her home being razed and her father--the very last of her family--being murdered, she gets seriously pissed off.
So naturally, she picks up Sephiroth’s own sword, which was likely stuck in her father’s dead body, and goes after him.
If you ever want to tell me that Tifa Lockhart isn’t a badass, I will punch you in the face with this scene.
I mean, I never said it was a good idea, but it doesn’t stop it from being badass.
Knowing the truth of what goes on during this part--the bits not included in this flashback--it seems like Sephiroth’s breakdown inspires greatness in everyone else.

Sephiroth actually says this bit to Zack in CC, rather than as a response to Cloud, I think. In fact, Zack says something different here, and this is Cloud’s line later on, when he actually goes against Sephiroth. After he disembowels him, actually, if I remember correctly.
I definitely missed a line here, about ignorant humans or something, I think. Or, inferior dullards, according to CC.
What’s interesting it compare this bit to the CC version, just because Sephiroth’s face.
I believe it was quartercirclejab who pointed out the difference of his expressions--Cloud saw it as pure insanity, but Zack saw longing on his face; Zack, who seems to have both more understanding and more sympathy toward what Sephiroth is dealing with. As we know, Cloud didn’t even know about Genesis’ involvement here.
He doesn’t look very sad to me.

Well, that seems like a good place to end this chapter. With Cloud not knowing what the fuck is going on. I guess that’s how we end every chapter, though. Seeing as there’s a theme going on here with me writing you terrible songs, uh, tune in next time to see if I...continue doing that? Sure.
hoping i'm right because i love the ornate buster sword hilt. i think the iron band around the hilt we see is just to protect the ornate gold hilt.
Seems to be a common consensus! wall-market-whiskey-sours alsosuggested that the filigree broke soon after Cloud got the sword,probably due to the millions of missiles and shit fired at Zack, andthat he put something else on the top to protect it while he got itfixed, and then kept the blocky thing on until post OG, where hereplaced it when he used the sword as a memorial.
