I'm Heather's biggest fan btw
I’m fearful of how Joey and Lucien may fight you on this…. LOL
What inspired Heather and Olive, and how much would you say you strayed away from your initial inspiration/thought over time?
They have changed SO much over the years. There is a lot to unpack in this question (which is good for me!) but I wanted to start with the “then vs now” of how they have, primarily, changed aesthetically.
At the time of making Heather, her sister Ange, her exhusband Christian, and his brother Garrett, I was watching a lot of Soul Eater and Madoka Magica, so the inspiration for their original fantasy world came from there. Later in high school I pivoted them into a “modern” era and gave them a new look. This developed more and more over time until college when I gave them the designs they have now. They also became educators briefly before becoming witches and finally settling on ranchers. AUs of them as witches still exist somewhere in my archives and some old art of them as educators (in what my girlfriend joked was “inappropriate workplace attire” for the steep signature neckline i gave Heather) still exists but has largely grown dusty from lack of passion for those specific ones at the moment.
Heather’s and Olive’s personalities were initially drawn from friends/role models in my real life before they eventually became (much more recently) somewhat of a parallel to myself and my aspirations for her good looks (Heather) and my girlfriend (Olive) and their story began to resemble our own in some small ways.
I would say, overall, there is shockingly little resemblance to who they used to be. For me it was a gradual change but reflecting on it I am beyond stunned at how far they’ve come and how removed they are from their original inspiration. I dont think anyone would pin them as having originated as anime stereotypes mirroring magical girls and meisters and thank goodness for that.
