If your summary is mainly a self-deprecating wail fest, I ain't clicking. "Sorry I suck at writing. (Includes almost nothing abt the story)" Ok bye. Don't sell yourself short, give a proper summary, if you wanna talk abt how bad you are at writing, just add it in the authors note.

Or don’t, actually. Don’t put it anywhere in your published work. Stop self-deprecating on your work. Stop making assumptions about the tastes and desires of the people who have clicked on your fic.

When you tell me that your fic is trash before I’ve even looked at it, all it tells me is that you think the only people who want to read your fic, want to read trash. I know that writers do this to head off expected criticisms at the pass, but it’s fully cutting off your nose to spite your face. 

The act of putting yourself down before some imagined someone else can is actually hurting you. It is physically rewiring your brain to believe the shit you keep telling yourself. So stop telling yourself this shit and stop telling everyone else, too.

ALSO don't put your shame in your summary or notes either. don't say you're sorry or that you're going to hell or that what you wrote is evil or gross. I mean think about that for a second, yeah? the only people reading that note are people who are interested in the content it's referring to. you are saying all that stuff TO THEM.

& in addition to insulting and shaming your own readers, this (and self deprecation) only reinforces those feelings (like jess said ☝). you will never stop feeling ashamed if you attach more shame to the thing you're ashamed of! you will only hurt yourself and others and perpetuate the ideas that made you feel this way in the first place.

I'm fascinated by the different ways people portray Richie's stand-up in fics but the funniest by far is stealing it whole cloth from an existing comic, implying that John Mulaney (because it's always John Mulaney, with one notable exception of James Acaster which is doubly hilarious because their styles could not be more different) does not exist in the It cinematic universe.
