The opposite of study aesthetics. Midway through a health promotion and behaviour model essay and it seems chaos has erupted. 📉📉📉📉📉📉📉
being told i was smart and above average from a young age was probably one of the worst things to happen to me because now i have a complex and question my entire existence when i dont excel at something right away

How to deal with a concept you do not understand
Breathe. If you are starting to feel flustered, stressed, frustrated, take a break. The more angsty you feel, the less likely you’ll be able to focus on the actual concept. Take a break, study something else, but make sure when you’re trying to tackle a difficult concept, you are calm, cool, and collected.
Re-read your notes. This one is obvious but ask yourself if you’re actually re-reading your notes or if you’re just glancing over the page. Sometimes it helps to rewrite your notes in a different way.
Read someone’s else’s notes. Sometimes reading something in a different way can help you understand a concept you are struggling with.
Ask someone but make sure whoever you’re asking won’t confuse you further. To be safe, ask a TA, your professor, or an experienced tutor. I cannot count how many times I’ve casually asked someone to explain a concept and I end up leaving 10x more confused. Make sure you’re asking the right people.
Google it. Seriously. There are many amazing resources out there that may be as close as the click of a button.
Re-watch a lecture, if possible. Some professors webcast their lectures and going over your notes while listening to them is really helpful when you can’t quite grasp a concept.
Be patient. Sometimes, you’ll need to work at a concept over a number of days and that’s perfectly okay. The most important part is that you try your best to understand and that you realize everyone learns at different paces.
Do NOT wait until the last minute to tackle a difficult concept. Procrastinating on this kind of stuff right up before an exam can increase your anxiety and deplete your self-confidence. Make sure you tackle these difficult concepts as soon as you encounter them so you can take your time to understand everything.
this is beyond incredible
01/07/16 | throwback to when we were studying for IB HL biology in may… it’s hard to believe that we’ve graduated and will be moving on to bigger and better things in the fall! (P.S. happy canada day to all of our fellow canadians!)
someone asked me a while ago to make a masterpost about my supplies and my study methods so here we go!!
let’s say that i passed the first year of med school with an average of 7,5/10, so maybe this will be helpful!!
supplies
pilot frixion
stabilo highlighters
staedtler fineliners
mr wonderful planner
uniball jetstream
colored pencils
lots of white sheets
lots of scratch paper
computer with word
i’m mostly a visual learner that’s why i have so many pens in different colors
study methods
Planning
i always carry my planner with me when i go to uni and i write all of the due dates of the assignments. when i get home i plan my afternoon in like 15 minutes or even more (it depends on whether i have exams coming or not).
when i have exams i plan a week or two ahead and i think how many times i want to revise the subject and if i have more than two exams in a week (which happens a lot rip) i try to study the same amount of time for both if they are difficult subjects, obviously i’m not going to study psychology as hard as biochem. you need to study a subject based on how many ECTS credits it has, in my uni psychology has 3 credits and biochem has 9, so i have to study 3 times more biochem than psychology.
i also make a lil list of the chapters that i have to study for the exams, and everytime i revise one i put a mark next to it so i know that i’ve already studied it!
Taking notes
i take notes with my computer because my handwriting when i write fast is awful and really hard to read. i use word and it’s pretty good, if you can’t have word download open office it’s free and it’s good too!!
if your teacher has uploaded their presentations before class print them so you only have to make a few annotations. but if don’t really like to study from presentations like me copy paste the text and the pictures to a word document and write ALL of the stuff that the teacher says (i think that this is mostly for med school because in med school EVERYTHING is important). also if you have teachers who draw important stuff on the board take a white sheet and draw it, then when you get home scan it or take a picture with your phone and add it to your notes!!
then as soon as i get home like i said i edit my notes, which means that i fix the writing mistakes and stuff, i add color to the titles and i place the pictures (if there are) correctly, and if we’ve finished that chapter i print it and if it’s not too late i start revising. also i like my notes to look like a scheme, with lots of bullet points, that way i can see the important stuff faster and i don’t waste time reading really long sentences that only work to make your notes well written and grammatically correct.
DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME MAKING YOUR COMPUTER NOTES LOOK PRETTY AF, I DID THAT MISTAKE LAST YEAR AND IT DIDN’T GO WELL, but hey, if you think that you can handle it do it, but i do not recommend it!
Studying
like i said i’m a visual learner, so for complex subjects like biochem where there are tons of chemical reactions and you need to learn a bunch of names i make color coded schemes with the reactions, i use the pilot frixion because they’re erasable and that’s just perfect (no seriously it’s so helpful) and it looks like this
for anatomy, where you need to memorise EVERYTHING, i bought a coloring book and a feneis (which can be a coloring book too) and i assign a color for every muscle/bone….. in that page
and when i can’t make any kind of scheme and it’s just text (like embryo ew) i take my stabilo highlighters and i assign a color to the words, for example, the sonic hedgehog gene (yep u have a sonic gene!!) will be green, the dates will be blue, and for the important stuff i will use pink (classic) and it looks like this
and once i’ve ran out of highlighters, i use the staedtler fineliners to underline other words.
also for histology, or any other subject really, i like to make tables, for example for classifying the types of epitheliums and where they are. when i’ve done copying the info i assign a color to every kind of epithelium, and it looks like this
ok so once i’ve done all of this with my notes, i read them a few times and then i take an old scratch paper and i write everything that i’ve learnt from memory and it works!!!! i swear it does. and if i forget a few things i rewrite them in that paper and i read them a few times. also if there is a part of the chapter that i can’t get into my head i set a limit of time to read it and then i write it, and it works too!!
the bad thing about this method is that you waste tons of paper, i’ve thought of getting a board to write.
i forgot to say that it’s vital that you understand what you’re studying, it will make it so much easier to memorise and you’ll probably remember it for a longer time
sorry for all of the grammar mistakes, english is my third language, and if you have any questions just ask
good luck in your studies!!!!! 💖

June 25th {27/100}
Day 25 of my 100 days of productivity! I finally bought a Leuchtturm notebook! I’ve been wanted to get one for such a long time because the one I was previously using was kinda broken, and pages just fell out. So yeah, today I’m going to set up my bujo and make a plan for summer break.
welcome to waterstones ♡
13/06/16 || This morning and during part of this afternoon I re-read all my schemes because I’m scared that I won’t remember everything. I’m stressing about the fact that I’ve been studying like crazy and I’ve also had to memorize and remember a lot (like a loooot) of stuff and I’m scared that I won’t remember them or I will panick and forget everything I know. I have two days left from tomorrow before the exam, but I plan on taking a break at least on the day before just to recharge before the big day.
