Civitas Vol.3 "MAI 2016" In a new era, new rules and a new love

May of ‘68 France’s adolescents attacked the Paris “American Express” offices in an act of opposition against the war between the US and Vietnam, and were arrested by government authorities. After this, France’s youth demanded the release of those arrested at the offices and pushed ahead with a movement against authoritarianism and the existing social order. This movement resulted in the national surveillance that became normalized in many European societies as well as the spirit and purpose of the whole world in the name of the Cold War, and had a large influence over society as a whole, such as women’s liberation and hippie culture. It became representative of all societal movements as the “68 Revolution” or “May Revolution” and became a symbol of the spirit of the times.

“Let’s resist all authorities.” First France’s adolescents are placed under arrest, then university students demand release of the arrested adolescents. What is the meaning of these actions? America’s competitive system of securing dominance, reinforcing control in Asia, and the goal of hiding its many economic benefits bring on the war in Vietnam. At this time in France, on the opposite side of the world from Vietnam, adolescents attacked an American company’s office in opposition of the war. One side was armed with guns and missiles, and shot people. The other side smashed furniture and destroyed a small office. Between these two, one side had more slaughter and destruction, the other side resulted in imprisonment. 

The French students who couldn’t accept this irregularity, this absurdity, and the citizens who came to witness the existing social order begin coming out onto the streets. Why is violence only acceptable on one side? Why is our opinion a crime and your opinion correct? They threw those questions and demanded change in authoritarianism and the current social order. 

Our country’s case has similar examples to this: the April Revolution and the Gwangju Uprising. It’s the citizens’ strength to create change against huge power and authority. 

But 30 years have passed. The order that was new at the time is now old again, just rags and shabby clothes the newly born generation inherited from Big Brother.
