“oh ok then, whew. relief.” he nodded slowly as the man continued, appreciating the response and the expression of values. “you’re right, completely. local artists always miss out to amazon and walmart; they just don’t have the visibility they need and it sucks. people think it’s cheaper and easier to just go to a superstore and put money in ceo’s pockets.” marco shook his head sadly. “but at least we have people like you out there, who are concerned with integrity and soul.” he pursed his lips at the question, tipping his head to think. “I’d give it at least an hour and a half. maybe two and a half, if you have it to spare. there will be a lot of artists there, which doesn’t mean they’ll all have something you’re personally into, but it’s a lotta cool personalities in the group, so you’ll wanna leave time for those one on one convos, trust.”

“a lot of people also just don’t want to spend the time to go out of their way in order to find those simple hidden gems,” clyde offered with a hint of a laugh. “not only am i concerned with integrity and soul, but i also understand the value of time and a dollar. this culture is really wrapped up doing things quickly nowadays they’re used to seeing a commercial for something, then going to the store to buy it and that’s it. it’s important to make things personal,” he added with a nod of his head. “i’ll try to at least find an hour at the least, i have some things i have to get done, but i’m all for helping to support local artists.”

“shit – that’s… sweet. what do you teach??” curiosity will definitely get the best of them but, oh well. roman could wait to see the other’s paper’s to grade, but oh well, they want to know now. it’s nice to hear about someone’s passion but - if roman could read his thoughts, they’d agree: about their photography, about their graphic design, about their art. it may not make a lot of money but they’re happy and they love what they do. they want to finish college, though. get a degree. use their art in something more important, like teaching people, like a business. “yeah!!” his voice brought them back to reality. “i’m sure. i mentioned i bought too much, right??” a pause, brows furrowing as they racked their brain. “i don’t care. i’m kind of nosy, so it’ll be fun. student teacher confidentially though, right??” they gave the other a cheeky smile, then added, “i even have my own fancy pens. – you wanna go get your stuff and i’ll start on dinner??””

“a plethora of history courses, a lot of basic world civilizations classes and us history one courses,” he rambled slightly, a soft laugh. as much as he hated sitting down and grading papers or exams he liked seeing how times had changed and attitudes of people had changed seeing as he’d been a professor for over four decades. “if you need help cooking or anything I can set the table or anything,” he offered with a grin. he didn’t want to intrude or be a bother in any way. he gave roman a nod and showed himself out to go to his apartment. after picking up a stack of exams he made his way back into his neighbors apartment. “these are from my intro class so they shouldn’t be too difficult.”

“oh now you’re making me sound like a used car salesman or somethin!” he shook his head, wanting desperately to dispel that notion. “i couldn’t be further from. i’m just a lowly artist who wants to support artists, and help you escape the capitalist season by doing something for your soul.” his eyes widened dramatically, imbibing the moment with over-the-top meaning. “so i won’t make money if you come, but you might keep your sanity for another new year, not to mention your integrity.”

“oh don’t worry, if i got the used car salesman vibe i’d have kept walking,” he offered with a light laugh followed by a tight lipped smile. “well i don’t really have that many people to buy for so this particular christmas i’m not clouded by capitalism, but, it’s always good to support local artists. plus, it’s been awhile since i’ve done something for my soul,” he replied with a but of dramatics to match the other man. “oh my integrity ? now that’s something i can’t afford to lose,” he teased with a bit of a serious expression on his face. “how much time should i spend there do you suggest ? how big a chunk of time do i need to clear for this ?”

whenever all their bags were set down, roman rubbed his brow bone, then placed their hands on their lower back, leaning every other which way to pop their back. “oh, shit,” a pause. maybe they shouldn’t curse in front of a teacher. “huh, you teach?? that’s cool. i’ve always wanted to do that.” there was a shy smile on their face. it’s weird to have someone in their space, but here they are, hands on their hips, an awkward gaze being thrown at the other. his smile made their’s spread, though. this situation was weird but at least he’s being nice. “well – since you helped and all, wanna stay for dinner?? it’s the least i can do. i probably bought too much but, uh, you can bring your papers over. i can – help. if i can, that is.”

his fingers curled around the strap of his messenger bag as he leaned a bit on the table. “it’s pretty cool, depending on the group of students in the class,” he offered with a small laugh, “i teach university though so there’s a good mixture of heavily involved, sort of involved, and not involved at all people.” even on a bad day clyde didn’t see himself doing anything else. his eyes widened hearing the other’s offer, he hadn’t been expecting anything like this, though it did make his smile a slight bit wider. “that would be really nice, but are you sure ? i really wouldn’t want to impose. but some grading help would be nice, i have some exams and an answer key so it wouldn’t be too difficult. but only if you’re sure ? sometimes time seems to drag when i do it, wouldn’t want to put that on you.”

marco was part of an arts collective and network in st. augustine, concerned with increasing exposure to the art community in the city, drawing more people out to events, encouraging them to support local artists with their free time, rather than see the next avengers movie. today he was canvassing with flyers about a gallery showing with a horror christmas theme. it was actually pretty interesting, using themes of a virgin birth, difficult family dynamics, and the horror of capitalism to drive the fear home.

he stopped a guy walking in the opposite direction to shove a flyer at him, high energy coming through the exchange immediately. “listen. i know you’ve been given a thousand flyers before, and they go directly into the trash, but this one is different, this one is important, and you’re gonna wanna hang onto it.”

clyde’s mind was preoccupied with the amount of things on his to-do list. after teaching three lectures today he was exhausted, though with the end of the semester quickly approaching his stack of papers to grade was starting to get higher than his patience level. he was hoping to get home in time to possibly catch a power nap before buckling down at his desk and if he was lucky, make a dent in the pile. currently he was making his way to the coffee shop to pick up a drink for after he woke up, sure that he’d need it to get through the rest of the night.

suddenly there was someone in his path, clyde looked up to meet the face of the man that stood before him as the flyer was shoved into his hands. he listened to the words as his eyes scanned the piece of paper, thinking over whether he’d throw this in the trash despite the man’s warning or not. “what makes it so important ? give me your hook, sell me on it.”

“it’s – fine,” they don’t know why they’re reacting this way, it’s not really that big of a deal, roman has gone through worse. “thank you,” they gave their neighbor a tight lipped smile and their face was flushed and instead of being their stubborn self, they took a quick peek in their apartment and decided they didn’t care if they had a messy living room and company over. “yeah. that’d be great.” they offered an armful of bags to the other and quickly stepped inside. “if you could set them over here,” they gestured to the island they were walking too, “that’d be great.”

“you’re welcome,” he responded with a nod of his head. clyde knew the dilemma of whether to struggle to avoid anyone catching a glimpse of his possible scattered apartment or deciding the mess was manageable. he took the bags from his neighbor and followed them inside, fighting the urge not to look around a lot, not wanting to come off as nosy. he set the bags down as where he was instructed before taken a step back. “i reckon your place is much neater than mine, i’ve got numerous exams to grade and unfortunately i’m not always so tidy,” he spoke with a polite smile gracing his lips.

usually they’d tease back with their neighbor but right now – they’re desperate. “um, can you – just,” they cleared their throat awkwardly, arms fulled with grocery bags. “this is gonna be weird but can you grab my keys and unlock my door for me??”

clyde shook his thoughts clear as he heard the words, seeing the other was struggling and internally cursing at himself for not noticing before. “oh, yeah of course, sorry,” he adjusted his own bag on his shoulder before moving to take the keys from them. he unlocked the door and even opened it for them so they wouldn’t have to. “would you like me to take something off your hands ? help you inside or anything ?”

“It’s hard to believe the year is almost over.” It didn’t seem like it was almost Christmas– almost the new year. Had it really flown by this q u i c k l y? “This might call for some coffee to reflect on that.” Areum also just needed some liquid caffeine and wanted an excuse to order something hot and sweet.

“time has always dragged for me, it still feels like mid february to me so i’m ready to ring in this new year.” clyde was used to long days, months and even years. keeping up with the changing of seasons and holidays, just watching as time inched by. “i’d agree with you, some caffeine is always necessary.
