It was that first option—not a matter of Jem being afraid so much as a matter of Jem respecting Kit’s independence and agency in forming bonds with his new family. Kit had a father, and while Johnny was not the warmest presence, he was still Kit’s dad, who raised him and taught him card tricks and protected him as best he could. Kit hasn’t known Jem for very long, and they are really still getting to know each other and feel out their relationship. So Jem feels that it would be presumptuous of him to refer to Kit as “son.” Kit views Tessa and Jem as chosen family, which is a very powerful thing, but that doesn’t mean that he would choose to call Tessa his mom or Jem his dad. They love him, and they will grow into their own roles as his guardians. If Kit asked them to refer to him as their son, they’d do it. But as far as they’re concerned, that ball is in his court, and Forever Fallen just takes place too close to TDA for Kit to have made that definite choice yet.

Hi Cassie! What order are the short stories for TLH? What character’s perspectives?

The point of views vary, and the times jump around. Because they’re free content, they’re not meant to one day form a cohesive novel in the manner of Ghosts of the Shadow Market or The Bane Chronicles. They’re just overall insight into the characters and world of Last Hours.

Hello!! I absolutely love Gwyn! And since Gwyn is a faerie and he has a very long life span. Was he alive in 1903? Will we see him in Chain of Gold or other books from TLH?

It’s possible, of course! I will say TLH is much less focused on faerie than TDA was, and much more a return to Shadowhunters and Downworlders versus demons. Gwyn isn’t in book one, though we do see a faerie we’ve met before, but you never know about the next books!

In the other eldest curses books, will Magnus find out that ragnor is alive or do they only find in queen?

He finds out in Eldest Curses. In Queen he already knows (a bit disorientating, but that’s the chronology) which is why he and the rest of the TMI cast aren’t surprised to see Ragnor at all.

Max is definitely in it — in fact a danger posed to Max opens the book!

But this question is super important to me... do you think you could have a character in your books that wears a hijab (head scarf)? Representation is such a huge thing in your book which is something I love love loveee! Also, I hope you are taking care of yourself and I wish you a well surgery and recovery :)

Thanks! I’m trying to rest up and get prepared and answer questions now since I won’t be online much after the surgery. I’m cueing up the short stories for TLH to be posted, doing advance newsletters, etc. It’s about my concentration level at the moment!

Speaking of TLH, Sona wears a roosari — hijab in Persian/Farsi — though of course that doesn’t preclude another hijabi Shadowhunter in the future!

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about your health and hope you get the help you need to feel better ASAP. I'm a chronic pain sufferer and know how hard it can be. Your books helped me a lot through some of my harder times. My new son (actually named Jace after my favourite sarcastic Shadowhunter!) and I really enjoyed RSOM - I read some to him. So beautiful. I can't wait to find out more about what happened to my favourite green Warlock between CoG and QoAaD!

Well, maybe lucky :) They’re not precisely faerie wings. We actually hear more about them and why they appeared in Forever Fallen.

I just wanted to say I’m so excited to know Dru better.. it’s the first PLUS character we have and I just really want to see how her grow comfortable in her own skin and not necessarily get a diet.. Hi! I've been wanting to ask about this for a very long time. Knowing what Tessa was going through with finding/protecting Kit, her pregnancy, and the warlock sickness I understand this perhaps may not have crossed her mind. I had hoped that she would have had a conversation with Cristina because of the parallels and conflicts in regards to loving two people at once, I felt that it would have been special. Since it didn't happen, I was wondering if one day they will have a moment together?

While Tessa and Cristina bonded as they worked to defeat the warlock illness, it’s true they didn’t discuss their personal lives! Tessa would have had no way of knowing what was going on with Cristina, and I’m not sure she would have compared it to her own situation as the relationship between Mark and Kieran was not what Jem and Will had in the relationship of parabatai. I like to think that if Tessa had known — and perhaps she found out toward the end, when gazing at the wedding party after Magnus and Alec got married — she would have liked to say something to Cristina about the value of loving two people. Although Cristina might be very puzzled since she certainly doesn’t know anything about Tessa’s past love life!

Hi Cassie!! First of all, I’d want to say that RSOM was completely AMAZING and totally is one of my favorite shc books. My question however, is not about it. I saw that you’re having medical complications (i’m really sorry and hope you get better♥️), so does that mean you won’t be in NYC bookcon this year? Actually, I am planning to be at BookCon, but I am going to be in a wheelchair. BookCon has been really good about being accommodating for things I’ll need, and keeping my schedule not too crazy, so I have fingers crossed that everything goes okay and I can attend. There will be samplers for Chain of Gold and gorgeous TLH posters and I’m excited. :)

(Alas, I am probably not going to be doing any other festivals or international travel this year. I just can’t plan for long plane flights right now. :< )
