The COVID-19 lockdown a boon: an Alternate Perspective
Without a doubt, no generation alive today has seen anything that comes even remotely close to the times we are living in now. Over the years, there have been several natural disasters that have caused havoc and chaos. Sure, there was an “ebola” viral outbreak in most of the African continent in this 21st century alone, but nothing even comes close to the sheer magnitude and scale of destruction to human lives as being seen today by the novel coronavirus outbreak. Not only has this virus affected millions of human lives across the globe but deeply impacted the lives of several more. Two of the main reasons for this are its novelty and ruthless effectiveness. Some scientists are claiming that the corona-virus has an intelligence of its own and that too one that outsmarts its victims, by showing mild symptoms and incubating within the human body till it can spread more rampantly. This is what makes the invisible enemy we fight today even more dangerous and lethal than the mightiest of foes we can imagine.
India witnessed the first of its cases at the beginning of this year but failed to prepare for the vast destruction that was in store for us all. This happened mainly because of the novelty of this virus as most calamities that happen for the first time can’t warrant adequate preparation at short notice. However, much like most things in life, each event/adversity has its pros and cons too. No doubt he cons outweigh the pros significantly but here are a few benefits that may accrue from this grave epidemic and subsequent lockdown measures:-
Personal Growth and Development: Since most countries affected by the coronavirus have enforced a lockdown for their citizens which translates into more time at home, one can use this time to better themselves in several different ways. Popular ways to do so would be to start a new hobby or learn a new skill. Hobbies such as book reading, art, and craft, cooking, exercise, and fitness are a great way to increase your learning and a sure way to achieve personal growth and development.
Spiritual Growth: With the lockdown being enforced vehemently, one can engage themselves in the pursuit of spiritual growth too. Yoga and Meditation have proven to be a great way to achieve this. In our current times, even the busiest business professionals can’t complain of not having enough time to spend on themselves, and these positive activities as some several resourceful apps and websites have cropped up over the past few months in this regard. Use this time to introspect and dive deeper within, so that once we do come out of this lockdown, you can enjoy the subtle beauty in everyday life.
The shift from material pleasures: Since the COVID-19 epidemic has limited earnings and consequent spending in most households, it would not be wrong to assume that these times have lessened the dependence on material and superficial pleasures. One has come to live more with less as the realization of the transient nature of life has been brought forth by this epidemic. For those dependent on retail therapy or eating and dining out for their happiness, the lockdown has shown us how to enjoy the smaller things in life a great deal more.
Environmental Rejuvenation: With a big dip in pollution levels of all sorts across the globe, whether it is in our water, air, or soil, most parts of the world have witnessed purity in the elements that were unknown to us. There have been reports of several species in birds and wild animals that appear to have come back from extinction with the lessening of man’s destruction of our glorious planet. Metropolises like Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram; once touted to be amongst the most polluted cities to live in have also shown remarkable improvement in their air quality and general pollution levels.
Quality Family Time: In times of the pre COVID-19 outbreak most families with working professionals were unable to spend enough quality time with their kin and as result young children in these families often complained of feeling neglected and overlooked. Use this time to reconnect with your family on a deeper level and make the most of the lockdown. After all, the most precious gift you can share with your children is your time.
