I have to roll my eyes at people who ask how people can ship Drarry or Dramione when the ships are toxic. Obviously, you don’t pair them as is (that being, the way Rowling ended the story). That’s why people make fanfiction to develop them in a way to make their union more realistic and not “toxic.” Obviously, that involves developing them like they weren’t in the original series. That doesn’t mean there was never a way to bring them together or connect them. That’s why we the fans do it.
